Alternative pop duo Puppy Le Pew bring a sound that blends club euphoria with lo-fi intimacy to offer something entirely new. Based in Tallahassee and formed by married pair Jacob Siefert and Amina Kamau, the project takes its name from the uncomfortable collision of cartoon absurdity and real-world unease, a nod to both Pepe Le Pew’s problematic legacy and the sweaty claustrophobia of a wedding dress.
That strange tension is stitched throughout their music; pop that’s playful yet barbed, packed with underground references and designed to provoke not just movement but thought and emotion. First unveiling their sound in 2023, they’ve shared a string of singles over the last couple of years and now, on their debut EP titled Lore, Puppy Le Pew serve up five tracks that span neon chaos and fragile vulnerability, a set of songs that feel hacked together in a creative frenzy.
The record is shaped by a fabric of alternative pop and electronic influences such as Charli XCX, Overmono, Fred Again, Caroline Polachek, Björk, DJ Seinfeld, Linkin Park and Talk Talk but the end result is thoroughly their own. It’s a sonic cocktail that doesn’t smooth out the edges, instead daring listeners to confront contradictions of joy cut with vengeance, love underpinned by exhaustion, myth and memory colliding with the stark present.
Forged in the aftermath of the 2024 election cycle, much of it was pieced together in a New Orleans Airbnb, stitched from vintage synths and drum packs pulled from the internet’s hidden corners. The duo describe the EP as a “broadcast from the brink of the American inferno” and the description fits, the songs reflect missed connections, toxic boundaries and cycles of despair, all spun into something visceral and strangely euphoric.
Behind the production sits Jacob, an Air Force veteran and licensed private investigator, he builds soundscapes with Fairlight CMI samples and jungle relics dating back to 2003. His background in digital art adds another dimension to the project, crafting visuals that recall the surreal charm of vintage cartoons twisted into something more disquieting.
Alongside him is Amina, a vocalist whose origins in political organising and dance come through in her uncompromising performances. She describes her energy as “Rumpelstiltskin, little-bunny-foo-foo-ass” and her delivery lives up to that strange self-portrait. Her voice moves between storybook playfulness and a biting fury, taking each song into new emotional spheres. Together, she and Jacob create a dialogue that’s equal parts clash and convergence, a balance that keeps their sound palatable but never complacent.
With Lore, Puppy Le Pew step into the alternative pop world as true disruptors framed in a sound of club-ready energy, emotional honesty and adventurous experimentation. From the hazy soundscape and punchy beats of their debut single “Satellite” to the blissful melodic vocals and pulsing instrumental textures on “Space Mistakes” to title track “Lore” which closes the EP with an uptempo club-focused energy cut with rattling synth tones and slick vocal work, Puppy Le Pew’s debut EP delivers a thrilling listening experience that’s sure to win over fans around the world.
