Based between Berlin and London, Melodiva is a project that was formed by two brothers in 2019 when the duo set out with an ambition to bring together music and visual art. Building worlds through sound that shift between ambient serenity and reflective context, their music shines in the space between light and shadow, equal parts dreamlike and rhythmic, capturing the feeling of watching the world move by in slow motion, as if through a sepia-toned lens.
Melodiva’s goal has always been to craft immersive experiences, drawing from the textures of ambient and experimental pop while flowing across rock stylings and psych-inflected soundscapes. Poignant lyricism and absorbing production build atmospheres that invite reflection and with their early releases, they’ve begun to shape an engaging sonic world.
This year, their shared musical vision has taken shape in the form of multiple releases which track their original songwriting and sound. In January, they unveiled their sonic output with the debut single “Three Words, Twice,” which they followed up with a string of releases in the build up to their well-received debut EP called Landscapes, which landed at the end of last month.
Now, the duo returns with Landscapes | Reimagined, an extension of their debut project that reframes the music in a new setting. Every track from Landscapes is reworked, flipped, and rebuilt into something entirely new, resulting in a genre-bending experience that transforms familiar material into an exploration of sound and feeling. The record features two remixes, two reproduced renditions and a live studio version recorded just a month ago, with each outing revealing new layers of the original songs, exposing different emotions and sonic directions.
For the first time, Melodiva open their creative process to collaboration, working with the likes of Allan Low, Oman Sounds and Hiroki Grin. Opened with the new version of “No Exceptions,” the soft strums of guitar and steady rhythm of shaker is met by the pulse of kick and intricate lead notes to form a subtly lively indie scene that flows with delicate vocal leads carrying alluring melodic lines. Progressing with an echo of dance energy and flowing through various twists and turns, it’s an engrossing outing that’s equally breezy and invigorating.
Allan Low then delivers a remix of “Nirvana,” which pairs sweeping instrumental textures with hushed vocals as the quiet rattle of fluttering percussive elements and buzz of synths float around the mix. Casting a transportive soundscape the track rolls with the uptempo shuffle of crisp beats and shifting synth elements to craft an exciting reimagining of the track.
Next up, Melodiva offers the live version of “Her Music,” forging an intimate rendition that captures the magic of the duo’s musical synergy in the moment, taking the listener on a dreamy seven-minute voyage through rhythmic switch ups and melodic bliss. The second remix comes with Oman Sounds’ take on “Questions” where the bubble of synth tones gently tumbles into place to meet the punch of pulsing bass synth and bright strike of percussion. Dashed with flashes of colourful synth textures, wrapped in an uplifting fabric and tinged with glitchy vibes, it’s a superb remix that takes the track into a downtempo IDM sphere.
Closing the EP with their updated version of “Sinner,” Melodiva inject muted rolling beats and silky synth swells as elegant vocals drift through the arrangement. Gathering pace with the march of drums and swirling instrumental tones, the track develops into a hazy alternative indie outing that’s truly impossible not to love. With this release, Melodiva showcase their knack for rebuilding their musical ideas in completely new ways, offering new musical moments that’s sure to charm fans both existing and new.
