Coming out of East Oakland’s alternative scene, Bay Area music veteran Izzy The Gent continues to develop the sound of modern post punk with his genre-fluid project Everything But The Everything. Known for his years of playing bass in San Francisco bands like The Cons, Song of the Siren, Fake Your Own Death and The Frail, Izzy’s musical journey includes decades of collaboration, experimentation and reinvention. His time with The Frail from 2010 to 2014 confirmed his status as a key figure in the city’s indie circuit, before a much-needed three-year break redirected his creative path.
That new chapter came unexpectedly via a chance visit to Oakland’s Legionnaire hip hop open mic reignited Izzy’s spark, setting up a return to music that would become Everything But The Everything. Starting out as a one-man studio endeavour, it soon grew into a collaborative project and eventually a full band. Now, Everything But The Everything distils artistic community, blending post punk, new wave and indie rock stylings through the combined energy of Izzy and his creative circle.
The lineup includes vocalists Sophia Prise and Tobias Hawkins who front the project, joined by guitarists Ian Dowd and Andrew Lund and drummer Chad Roxxit. In the studio, Landon Cisneros and Moog virtuoso Andrew Gomez add their own sonic flair, all shaped under the guidance of producer Rex Shelverton. Together, they form a musical ecosystem built on trust, experimentation and a shared vision that celebrates both the process and the product.
Unveiling the project in 2019 with the debut EP, Dream, over the years, Everything But The Everything has gone from strength to strength with a string of impressive releases. Now Izzy brings us the latest Everything But The Everything release with the brand new EP titled A & B Sides Vol. 3, the project’s first work of 2025 which delivers a double-single that continues its offering with two contrasting yet complementary tracks, “Never Said Goodbye” featuring Rykarda Parasol and “Horse Bit” featuring Sophia Prise.
Produced by Izzy and Rex Shelverton, the release starts with “Never Said Goodbye,” a track which sees San Francisco’s Rykarda Parasol bring her dark pop elegance to Izzy’s production. Following the release of her fifth album Tuesday Morning in 2023, Rykarda lends her hazy sophistication to a track that blurs the line between nostalgia and noir. Kicked off by the strike of drums, a smokey scene of twanging guitar tones and pulsing bass lines forms a slick groove as Rykarda’s subtly intense vocals roll above to craft a moody yet catchy jam.
On “Horse Bit,” Izzy reunites with longtime collaborator Sophia Prise, whose ethereal vocal delivery and electronic pop aesthetic infuse the track with atmosphere and lively energy. A classically trained musician with a flair for the avant-garde, Sophia transforms reflecting into melody, pairing the cerebral with the emotional in every line on this jumpy post punk anthem. Launching with uptempo percussion and the crunch of lightly gritty guitars, the track serves up an infectious jam capped by Sophia’s expressive voice as the arrangement glides through shifting rhythms and moods.
Through A & B Sides Vol. 3, Everything But The Everything once again stakes its claim as a leading creative hub and a project where collaboration is the very foundation. It’s an incredible new release that frames Izzy The Gent’s engaging songwriting and the talents of his creative partners, resulting in a living document of the Bay Area’s enduring indie spirit, still shining with invention and heart.
