Over the years, The Casbahs have become one of the most exciting acts to rise from the North East of England’s indie rock scene. Based in County Durham, the quintet channel the energy of their origins into a guitar-driven sound that delivers anthemic musical moments. First formed in 2019 by friends and songwriting duo Niall Fenwick on vocals and Joe Teasdale on lead guitar, the group originally went by the name Cellos before rebranding as The Casbahs.
Since then, they’ve been shaping their identity, developing a style that draws from the legacy of British indie rock while injecting their own forward-thinking edge. The lineup has expanded to include bassist and co-vocalist Jack Walker, drummer Harry Mason and most recently guitarist Steven ‘Brian’ Grainger, who joined last year. This new formation has firmly cast The Casbahs’ position in the regional music circuit, backed by a loyal fan base and radio support. Their sound reflects a fusion of guitar-based influences, led by powerful vocals and thrilling instrumentation that’s carried them beyond local stages and into the wider indie rock conversation.
They first made their entrance in 2019 with their debut EP Sea or Sky, released under their original name, before their full-length album Been Here Before arrived in 2022 under The Casbahs banner. That record showcased their knack for building anthemic, emotionally charged indie rock and marked them out as a band able of looking back at tradition while keeping their eyes fixed ahead. After taking a three-year creative pause, The Casbahs are now preparing to return with their highly anticipated second album.
Bringing us the first taste of their upcoming LP, they share the new lead single titled “Electric Daydreams,” a stunning piece of grooving indie rock cut with slick guitars and impassioned vocal performance. Recorded at The Garage Studios in South Shields, the track captures the energy of their developing sonic adventure while marking the first time they recorded with Steven Grainger as part of the lineup. His presence helped spark new ideas and expand their arrangements by adding his unique guitar flair to their sound.
Kicked off by the bounce of twanging guitar rhythms, the roll of drums ushers in a steady groove as the lead vocals float in to thread memorable melodic lines, trading the focus with flickers of lead guitar flashes. Rising to an epic chorus led by catchy hooks and rousing instrumentation, the track delivers an infectious musical experience that builds to an incredible crescendo of a soaring guitar solo before gliding into one last chorus to leave a lasting impression of the song.
Paired with the single is a music video that brings the track alive on screen featuring storytelling scenes that alternate between retro-tinged aesthetic and the surrealism of a dancing astronaut. It’s a stellar new outing that marks the band’s return in spectacular fashion while further building the excitement for their long-awaited second full-length release and we can’t wait to see what it’s got in store.
