Hailing from San Diego, Elise Trouw has spent the better part of a decade proving that pop music can be both technically impressive and emotionally compelling. A multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter and producer, she’s earned her reputation on creative versatility by blending the groove of jazz, the appeal of pop and the edge of alternative rock into something wholly her own. From her viral live-looping videos to her sharp conceptual storytelling, Elise has long blurred the line between performance art and pop music, crafting a sound and vision that feel as adventurous as they are intimate.
Her breakout moment arrived when her reimagined mashups of Foo Fighters’ “Everlong” and Bobby Caldwell’s “What You Won’t Do for Love” began circulating online, instantly catapulting her into global recognition. The hypnotic, one-woman-band performances showcased her skill by moving between drums, keys, bass and vocals as well as her ability to make reinvention sound fluid. It wasn’t long before she took that energy to the stage, performing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and earning millions of views that confirmed her as one of the most innovative young musicians working today.
Following her acclaimed 2017 debut record Unraveling, Elise embarked on her first sold-out headlining tour and joined Incubus on their 20 Years of Make Yourself anniversary run, a fitting pairing for an artist who shares the same experimentation and musical flair. Her creative drive has also led to collaborations with the likes of Seal, Todd Rundgren, Travis Barker and performances alongside Emmylou Harris and Noah Kahan, a range that speaks to both her adaptability and the talent she brings to every project.
Even with her growing success, Elise has remained steadfast in her mission of collaboration and community. Her open-source project #EliseCollab invited fans and fellow musicians to remix her music using shared stems, breaking down the walls between artist and audience. That curiosity has taken her across festival stages at SXSW, Kaaboo Del Mar, and the Montreal Jazz Festival, but also deeper into her own creative psyche.
Her latest project, The Diary of Elon Lust, is set to deliver a satirical concept album due out February 13th via Midtopia. Told entirely through her fictional male alter ego, Elon Lust, the record explores modern masculinity with biting wit and unnerving honesty. The newest single lifted from the upcoming release, “The Perfect Girl,” finds Elise fully immersed in the persona, turning a painful childhood memory into an absurdly upbeat yet deeply unsettling critique.
Inspired by the moment a group of boys made a “hot or not” list of her classmates, the track uses satire to reveal the insidious ways women are objectified from an early age. “It was one of the first moments I realised how girls were being seen. It wasn’t much about who we were. It was about how we looked. That never really left me,” she shares.
Its accompanying self-directed video, featuring Elise as Elon giving a classroom presentation on “how to build the perfect girl” blends dark humour with social commentary, continuing the surreal aesthetic first glimpsed in her recent track “All You Need Is Lust.” The world of Elon Lust is strange, funny and discomforting but also freeing. In it, Elise lets go of perfection and steps into full creative control, confronting the uncomfortable truths that shape identity and desire.
