American rocker Robert Allen, operating under his musical moniker DownTown Mystic, has spent his career chasing a sound that feels as alive today as it did half a century ago. A self-confessed obsessive for “old school” recording, Robert has dedicated himself to preserving the essence of rock n’ roll’s original era via the warmth of analogue tape, the bite of a vintage guitar riff and the soul of a song built to last. “I grew up listening to all these great records and their sound and style stayed with me,” he explains.
That devotion has shaped DownTown Mystic into something unique and truly worthwhile in the modern rock sphere, offering a project that’s at once a tribute to tradition and a blueprint for the future of rock. The sound of DownTown Mystic is equally vintage and modern, tethered the origins of American rock while still taking it forward. Buffalo Springfield, The Byrds, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones all echo through his sound but it’s filtered through a 21st-century lens.
Since 2011, the project has been making an impact with well-received studio releases, first shared on the debut album Standing Still and since then, he’s delivered a vast catalogue of work across multiple singles, EPs and records. From both the studio and the stage, DownTown Mystic brings together eras, proving that rock’s enduring power lies not in nostalgia but in reinvention.
Over the years, his efforts have earned DownTown Mystic widespread recognition, not just among radio programmers and fans but across film and television. His music has been featured in over 250 TV shows and several films, from The Voice on NBC and American Pickers on the History Channel to programs on MTV, CNN and National Geographic. His output has earned him a global audience that continues to grow, with DownTown Mystic’s original blend of heart and groove finding new ears far beyond its American background.
Now, he returns with his latest release, the six-track EP titled Mystic Highway, out via The Orchard/Sony Music just in time for the holiday season. The project continues his mission to deliver high-quality, soulful rock n’ roll, “One of the main features of the DownTown Mystic project are the musicians and the talents they bring to it,” he shares. True to that context, Mystic Highway brings together a superb lineup of players, including Steve Holley on drums and Paul Page on bass, a rhythm section so tight it practically hums.
Guitars, of course, remain front and center; Lance Doss, Bruce Engler and Justin “JJ” Jordan each bring their unique touch to the EP’s sound. Lance injects a southern-tinged edge while Bruce co-writes and lends his voice to “Read The Signs,” a mystical rock raga that also features on his solo record One More Chance. Meanwhile, Justin delivers delicate guitar flourishes and mandolin textures on the stunning “Some Day.”
The remastered version of “History” kicks off the release with an infectious, bluesy groove where crunchy guitar lines, rolling drums and pulsing bass sets up a lively and uplifting scene capped by compelling vocal leads carrying instantly catchy melodic lines. “Modern Ways” shakes with lively energy as the hazy twang of guitars and jumpy rhythms form an invigorating soundscape that presents a classic rock anthem for today’s audience.
The EP closes with the bonus track “Somebody’s Always Doin’ Something To Somebody,” offering a mellow groover that flows with smooth, stomping rhythmic energy and commanding vocal leads to deliver a memorable and highly engaging finale to the EP. From start to finish, on Mystic Highway, DownTown Mystic delivers an epic run through of his timeless rock sound, once again confirming his status as a torch bearer for the style in the modern era.
