Auckland-based project True North is the latest creative evolution of New Zealand songwriter and musician Tones Thorburn. Known for his past work with Stormporter and Late Model European, Tones’ new endeavour represents both a personal and artistic rebirth that blends the energy of rock with the heart of soul, tracing an emotional compass toward something profoundly meaningful, taking place where conviction meets a steadfast belief in the redemptive power of music.
Tones’ musical path has always been paved by passion, determination, talent and faith and True North channels those qualities into something new. Each song under the True North banner carries the hallmarks of a seasoned artist finding renewal through creativity, balancing reflection with uplifting context in a way that feels at once timeless and sonically engaging. That vision first came to life earlier this year with True North’s debut single, “No Exit Wound,” released in May as an epic introduction via a groove-driven track that paired soul and subtle fire.
Produced by Ben King and featuring a sterling lineup of New Zealand musicians including Matthias Jordan, Milan Borich, and Sandy Mill, the single launched the True North project in spectacular fashion, instantly marking it as a must watch act in the modern music world. Now, True North builds on that momentum with his sophomore single titled “On a Prayer with a Broken Wing,” an upbeat, soulful anthem that blends rock-infused energy with radiant optimism.
Built around a call-and-response set up between male and female vocals, the track shines with life and emotion, landing as both a cry for strength and a hymn of hope. Thematically, “On a Prayer with a Broken Wing” is about perseverance, about holding onto love and faith when everything else feels uncertain. With a deft balance of grit and grace, triumphant horns, stunning harmonies and a rhythm section dripping in soul come together to create something utterly captivating.
Once again, the single features a dream ensemble of New Zealand talent with Matthias Jordan on piano and organ, Milan Borich on drums and vocals, Ben King on guitar, bass and production duties, Sandy Mill on vocals, Greg Johnson on trumpet and Lewis McCallum on saxophone. Brought in by the lively rustle of drums, a bluesy groove takes hold as bright sax pips, swooping vocalisations, bouncy piano and shuffling rhythms all combine. As Tones’ vocal leads enter to take the mic, intricate instrumental flickers dance around his voice while Sandy adds her own vocal flair to deliver an engrossing duet.
Peppered with twanging lead guitar and brimming with infectious melodic writing, Lewis’ dazzling sax solo sets up an anthemic finale to leave a lasting impression of the song. With a debut album set for release next year, True North is rapidly establishing himself as one of the most exciting new voices in the rock and soul sphere and he’s sure to follow his breakout year with another magnificent chapter in his sonic story.
