Hailing from the county of Shropshire and now based in contrast of London, singer-songwriter Andy Smythe stands as one of the UK’s most quietly compelling voices in modern folk and classic songwriting. Over the course of more than two decades, he’s enjoyed a career built on memorable melodic writing, poetic context and a storytelling style that feels equally timeless and relevant. Inspired by artists like Donovan and Nick Drake, Andy’s music takes cues from tradition but always stays open to reinvention.
His sound captures the intimacy of folk, the wide appeal of pop and the depth of literary songwriting, making him a unique presence on the London folk circuit and beyond. Andy’s artistic output is also informed by his love of language; his lyrics lean into the picture painting stylings of Leonard Cohen and Walt Whitman, using vivid imagery and emotional impact to bring his stories to life. Performing solo or with his talented band, Andy delivers music that connects in a thoughtful way with songs that explore love, loss, hope and the search for meaning in a world that rarely slows down.
It’s this blend of sincerity and talent that’s earned him praise from industry veterans including Mike Scott of The Waterboys, who recognised in Andy the spirit of a true songwriter. Since making his entrance in 2022 with his first album Love Unspoken, Andy has continued to expand his artistic vision through a string of releases, with his most recent full-length project, the critically acclaimed 2024 LP Poetry in Exile, marking a creative high point via a dark and reflective body of work examining the post-Covid landscape through song. Performed live with a full band, the record confirmed his status as an artist able to blend folk, rock and poetry into something uniquely his own.
Now, Andy Smythe returns with “Emergency,” the lead single from his forthcoming album Quiet Revolution. Bright, infectious and disarmingly British, the track showcases Andy’s flair for storytelling wrapped in the energy of classic pop rock. With echoes of The Proclaimers and Chuck Berry, “Emergency” finds the sweet spot between melodic folk charm and magnetic rhythm, resulting a song that feels vintage and utterly delightful from start to finish.
Written and recorded in Lewisham, the single captures a musical chemistry between Andy and his band, with Andy’s guitar, piano, bass and organ work joined by long-time collaborator Paul Challenger on lead guitar. Brought in by the rustle of shuffling drums, pulse of grooving bass lines and twang of bright lead guitar licks, Andy’s expressive vocals glide in above the flutter of breezy guitar rhythms and shimmer of splashy percussion to deliver an instantly catchy sound that rolls with bouncy rhythms and delicate melodic songwriting.
Dashed with warm piano notes and carried by a lively rhythmic flow, layered vocals stack up in the chorus to lay down alluring harmonies as Paul’s intricate guitar flickers add flashes of slick melodies throughout. Reaching an epic crescendo cut with blues lead guitar work, “Emergency” delivers a stunning showcase of musicianship panache and Andy’s songwriting flair. With his upcoming album on the horizon, he’s sure to dazzle countless fans across the UK and beyond and we can’t wait to see what he’s got in store.
