Coming out of Virginia’s rock scene, Butterfly Vendetta is a band that’s spent nearly two decades perfecting the art of energy, emotion and musical expression. First formed back in 2007 by longtime collaborators Bianca Vee and David Dillehunt, the band is built on a partnership that’s weathered time, trends and technology to forge a sound that’s entirely their own. Joined by bassist Remy Renegade and drummer John Allietta, Butterfly Vendetta bring together rock impact, the appeal of pop melodies and punk attitude into a musical output that strikes with both ferocity and heart.
Influences such as Foo Fighters, Paramore and Fall Out Boy all ripple through their sound, resulting in hook-driven musical moments packed full of rhythm and bright melodic writing. Their live shows are charged with high-voltage chemistry, marking Butterfly Vendetta as local legend across Virginia, while their imaginative music videos have attracted a loyal global following online.
With multiple self-released albums, a feature-length documentary, a concert film and over a hundred original songs, Butterfly Vendetta have become an artistic institution built from passion and sheer determination. Their longevity isn’t accidental; it’s born of the same spirit that defined the best of 90s and 2000s alternative rock where the band writes what’s true, plays it like it matters and keeps striding forward no matter what.
Bringing us their latest release, they share their seventh full-length record titled Adjectives & Expletives, an album that captures that spirit at full force. Produced by co-founder David Dillehunt, the record presents the work of seasoned artists reflecting on everything they’ve learned while still chasing the spark that started it all. Across its fourteen tracks, Adjectives & Expletives explores themes of love, loss and growth with the reflective touch of Bianca Vee’s poignant lyricism.
Opened by the uptempo chug of muted guitar on “Swerving,” Bianca’s expressive vocals enter as the taps of percussion injects a lively forward motion. Developing with split vocal lines and slick rhythmic switch ups, it’s an infectious rock anthem brimming with memorable melodic writing and energising instrumentation. “U’ve Been Served” crashes in with crunching guitars, pounding drums and commanding vocals to roll into a charging slice of pop-tinged alternative rock.
“Ready to Roll” arrives with bright vocal layers before the burst of gritty guitars, pulsing bass and splashing drums ushers in a flash of rock energy. Gliding with instantly catchy vocal leads and invigorating arrangement, it’s another epic outing that’s sure to win over fans around the world. Other highlights on the record include tracks like “Fight to Breathe” with its punching percussion and driving guitar lines capped by superb vocal work, resulting in an engaging rock soundscape from start to finish.
With “Smile for Me,” they slow things down to serve up a more mellow rock sound where David takes the lead to craft a 90’s inspired jam that’s surges with gripping energy. Closing the album with “Gone,” the hazy twang of fuzzy guitar plucks and warm bass notes are met by laid back vocals where David and Bianca take turns at the mic before meeting to craft an engrossing duet to provide a spectacular finale to their stellar new album.
Throughout Adjectives & Expletives, the band delivers an incredible snapshot of their shared sonic vision, offering an enthralling rock ride that’s original and enjoyable in equal measure. Having released the album on their Bandcamp, Adjectives & Expletives is set to drop on streaming platforms over the next month.
