Austin-based indie rock artist Edward Rendon is a singer-songwriter who’s been making an impression in the modern alternative music sphere over the last four years. Blending the nostalgic charm of Britpop with the haze of indie rock, his songs feel like delicate snapshots of emotion where tender, reflective and honest contemplation takes shape in engaging musical form.
A self-taught musician and producer, he began writing during the pandemic after years immersed in the visual world of art and design, turning isolation and self-reflection into sound. From his bedroom studio, he crafts music that captures the emotional texture of modern life, its anguish, its uncertainty and its fragile beauty. Making his official artistic entrance in May 2021, he unveiled his sound with the debut single “Already Dead” which he followed up with a string of tracks including a collaboration with Lloyd Moon on “Time.”
Following a brief hiatus from sharing his sound, this year he returned with new material, resuming his musical story with the single “In The City (V2).” Now he brings us his brand new debut EP titled Hopeless Romantic, a five-track outing that brings together the warmth of nostalgia with the ambition of widescreen, spacey rock, delivering a sound that’s at once profoundly personal and widely relatable.
Hopeless Romantic is a record about love and loneliness, about feeling too much and trying to make sense of it all. It’s guitar-focused and brimming with melodic charm, flickering between the classic swagger of Oasis and the emotional writing of. What binds it all together is Edward’s voice, both in deliver and perspective; his lyrics carry the candour of someone still figuring things out, able to articulate the ache and anxiety that define much of contemporary life.
Opened by the bright twang of guitar and crisp taps of hi hats on “Crazy Times,” Edward’s warm voice glides in to spin emotive melodic leads carrying poignant storytelling lyricism above. Building with the steady punch of drums and shimmer of reverberating guitar chords, he crafts a timeless pop-tinged indie rock outing that’s catchy, memorable and affecting all at once.
“Darling You’re a Star” lands as a cosmic slow-burn that feels like a love letter drifting through space, framed in a downtempo indie soundscape. Built around laid back guitars, crashing cymbals and smooth melodies, the track shines with warmth and devotion, its ballad-style vocals reverent and thoroughly moving. It’s a song that captures Edward’s gift for translating emotion into sound, deeply romantic but never saccharine, wistful without ever collapsing into despair. With “Late Night Driving,” he serves up a lively jam that progresses with rolling drums, muted guitar textures and compelling vocal performance to create an energising indie rock anthem packed full of catchy writing and invigorating arrangement.
“Fast Passion” slips into a moodier scene where the smokey chug of guitar rhythms and pattering shuffle of drums are capped by his alluring vocals. The closing track, “Hopeless Romantic,” is a six and a half minute epic that serves as both statement and surrender; refusing to repeat itself, it builds slowly before tumbling into an emotional crescendo. Wrapped up in an enveloping soundscape, it’s a meditation on yearning, impermanence and the hope that perseveres even when love feels unreachable, offering a superb finale to his sensational debut EP.
Commenting on the release, he shares, “This EP means a lot to me. It’s made up of songs I’ve held onto for years and new ones I’ve written just recently. It’s for the yearners, the anxious, and anyone who loves a good spacey guitar rock song. And really a response to the state of the world and my growing anxiety due to it.”
