Based in Melbourne, ReeToxA is the moniker of Jason McKee, a musician whose origins stretch back nearly three decades. Though the project itself may be a new name to listeners, it arrives with the background and wisdom of experience, a result of years spent exploring the relationship between melody, emotion and sonic energy. Jason’s journey began in the mid-1990s, an era shaken by the rise of grunge and the transformative sounds of Nirvana and Pixies.
That moment of musical upheaval, when guitars were drenched in distortion and lyrics burned with emotion, left a lasting impression on him and ignited a creative drive that would never fully fade. Now, under the banner of ReeToxA, he channels that early spark into something new with a project that threads the intensity of alternative rock through the lens of modern indie. The sound balances impact and groove with a candid lyrical style that feels distinctly his own. Itâs the work of an artist reconnecting with the roots that shaped him while finding new ways to express the complexities of life, relationships and identity.
The first showcase of this rebirth arrived with “Bobbie,” a debut single that fused driving riffs with heartfelt storytelling, instantly defining ReeToxAâs musical output. Pines Salad, the bandâs debut album, produced in collaboration with the acclaimed Simon Moro captured the full scope of Jason’s songwriting and the bandâs chemistry through a blend of power and deeper meaning that flickered between fierce, high-energy moments and softer reflections.

Bassist Kit Riley, guitarist James Ryan and drummer Peter Marin round out the lineup, each bringing a unique sonic flair that transforms ReeToxA into something bigger than a solo project. Now, ReeToxA returns with “Insta Life Donna,” the latest single lifted from Pines Salad and perhaps the bandâs most personal and pointed release to date. The song tells the story of an interfering relative; a newly married in-law offering misguided advice to her sister, unaware of the damage her words are causing.
Jason frames the real life tale with a mix of frustration, irony and empathy, turning a personal situation into a broader commentary on how people meddle in relationships they donât understand. Wrapped up in a bright synth rock soundscape, the track flows with smooth synth lines and laid back percussive punch as Jason’s rich voice rolls in to spin delicate melodies above as intricate guitars glide alongside his voice. Building with an infectious chorus cut with the shimmering twang of guitar notes and propelled by danceable energy, it’s a charming jam that places Jason’s own experience in the setting of an engaging musical setting.
Once again putting his catchy songwriting and performance talent on full display while showcasing the range of his musical output, “Insta Life Donna” delivers an epic musical moment from start to finish. With his highly anticipated sophomore record set to land early next year, ReeToxA is set to continue going from strength to strength after his exciting breakout year.
We caught up with ReeToxA to find out more about his new single “Insta Life Donna,” his songwriting process and more. Check out our interview with ReeToxA below.
Hey ReeToxA, how’s things?
I am great! Very busy with the second album should be out January.
What inspired you to write “Insta Life Donna”?
I was making one last effort to save my marriage but everyone was against it. Divorce was the right thing to do but I couldnât see it. One day my ex mentioned something her sister said and I lost it. I started screaming the song driving on the highway into my phone.
The song tackles the theme of family interference, what made you want to address that through music?
I guess I was just jealous I had no one helping me. Everyone felt the relationship was toxic and over and they were right in hindsight.
Can you tell us more about the real life story that sparked the idea for “Insta Life Donna”?
Donna had been mostly single the ten years I knew her and suddenly she got married to a mining executive from Ireland and started telling everyone what to do ! We called her Insta life.
How did you come up with the title?
Her nickname was Insta life Donna due to a sudden whirlwind change to her life.
How did you capture the frustration and emotion of the situation in your lyrics?
It started as an angry song but I started to see the funny side of it, and turned it into an 80âs style pop song. I always thought she dressed like the 80âs.
Were you aiming for a specific mood or tone when creating the song?
I wanted it to be catchy and danceable.
How did you translate such a personal experience into something relatable for listeners?
When I showed people the song they loved it and it turned out everyone had a âDonnaâ or âKarenâ in their life! I was blown away!
How do you find the balance between storytelling and direct honesty when the songâs topic hits close to home?
Eventually I saw how over the top I was being and emotional got the better of me. I found divorce very hard. Eventually I turned it into a joke like I always do.
How would you say the song compares musically to your previous single “Amber”?
Wow they both come from a passionate theme and experience but I would say Insta life Donna is more modern.
Did you intentionally approach this song with a different sound or energy than your earlier work?
Yeah I wanted synth which I had not heard in my head that much before. I wanted to catch the silliness and humour of the situation.
Do you see the song as a critique, a reflection, or more of a warning?
Itâs definitely a warning that someone is always watching you! Especially relatives!
Did you experiment with different musical arrangements before settling on the final sound?
Yeah I asked Simon for the synth and explicit bridge and he helped me get the dynamics.
Finally, looking back at everything youâve experienced, what does being ReeToxA mean to you today?
My whole life resolves around it and thereâs no turning back. I’m into it for the long haul.
