Rising from the Czech Republic’s underground metal scene, Palpitate have been going from strength to strength since forming in late 2018. Today, the trio features the talents of Milan Skřivánek on vocals and guitar, Tomáš Holý on bass and René Šalamoun on drums, operating at the crossroads of heaviness and heart, where powerful riffs collide with intricate melody. Their sound is uncompromising and thoroughly dramatic, one moment brash and feral, the next unexpectedly delicate, a sonic balancing act that nods to the context of their name, that quickening pulse between eruption and calm.
Capturing their explosive sound in the studio, in 2021 they made their emphatic artistic entrance with their eponymous debut EP, serving up five gripping tracks that firmly planted them on the map of alternative bands on the rise. Following a brief hiatus from sharing their fiercely original sound, in late 2023 they returned with new material and have since dropped a string of well-received singles while winning over fans across Europe and beyond.
Now, Palpitate returns with their latest single titled “Devour,” a thrilling entry in their catalogue that finds the band turning their gaze to an emotive setting. It’s a dreamy metal ballad built on contrast; heavy enough to rattle the bones but tender enough to break the heart. Inspired by personal experiences and memories that persist, the song captures that bittersweet tension between holding on and letting go.
Thematically, frontman Milan Skřivánek delivers one of his most poignant performances to date, his words spill like recollections at dusk, fragments of beauty and pain intertwined, each line soaked in emotion. His profound lyricism transforms nostalgia into something relatable; it’s the ache of remembering something beautiful and knowing it can never return, yet still feeling it beneath your skin as if it never left.
Set up by the intricate flicker of clean guitar notes and tapped percussive shots, the gentle roll of drums is met by the charge of crunching guitar lines, injecting an anthemic alternative rock sound that simmers down as Milan’s expressive vocals glide in. Spinning lively melodies via theatrical delivery, the contrast in the impact of his voice and the delicate aesthetic of the instrumentation feeds into the juxtaposition in the song’s theme before launching with stacks of biting guitars, crashing drums and belted vocals, resulting in an engrossing sound that’s wholly absorbing, exhilarating and thoroughly powerful.
Gliding with smooth ebb and flow throughout, “Devour” floats through bursts of rousing metal style energy and moments of hazy instrumental passages, surging with dazzling lead guitar work. Slipping into a raucous finale of punchy drums and dark, chugging riffs, the track delivers a riveting listening experience from start to finish. Once again showcasing their incredible songwriting talent and musicianship flair, “Devour” sees the band continue to stake their claim as one of the most exciting band’s in Europe’s alternative rock music sphere and we can’t wait to see what they’ve got in store next.
