For decades, Kenneth Woods has been a name that conjures thoughts of meaningful artistic expression in the classical world. A conductor, composer and cellist celebrated by The Times, Gramophone and Forbes, he’s spent years immersed in the discipline of orchestral music, moving through a world of structure, legacy and reverence. With over fifty acclaimed releases to his name, he’s enjoyed an astonishing career thus far, but beneath the formality and finesse, there was always an energy that’s now found its voice in a completely different universe.
Reborn as Ken Woods, he’s traded concert halls for barrooms, the baton for a guitar and the orchestra for a band of kindred spirits called The Old Blue Gang. This new project marks an adventurous reinvention and where Kenneth Woods once channelled the grandeur of symphonic tradition, Ken Woods & The Old Blue Gang jump into the world of Americana. Drawing from the unvarnished textures of blues, folk, country and jazz, the band’s sound feels equally rough around the edges and literate, offering music that knows where it comes from, but never stays put.
The name The Old Blue Gang itself carries a provocative context borrowed from a notorious group of 19th-century horse thieves and murderers implicated in the Hells Canyon Massacre, figures whose legend nods to both folklore and infamy. By reclaiming that name, Ken and his band aren’t glorifying violence, but rather reclaiming what’s been lost to distortion, challenging how ideologies and movements repurpose cultural symbols for their own ends.

Their debut album, Silent Spike, landed last summer to critical acclaim and now Ken Woods & The Old Blue Gang bring us their latest release with their new single titled “Oh Denise,” a song which bursts out laughing in the sunlight. It’s a light-hearted, high-spirited romp built on a deep Texas-swing groove, blazing guitars and Ken’s gravelly vocals, forming a track that feels like it was born out of pure joy and sweat-soaked jam sessions. The song represents a deliberate step away from the gravity of his previous work, embracing humour, swagger and playfulness without sacrificing the musicianship flair the band has become known for.
“Oh Denise” hits hard from the first bar, a screaming Stratocaster slicing through a swampy Texas shuffle held steady by Joe Hoskin and Steve Roberts, the rock-solid rhythm section that gives The Old Blue Gang its infectious groove. Rolling with steady rhythmic energy and wrapped in a gritty aesthetic, it’s an epic blues rock jam packed full of exquisite instrumental flourishes and superb vocal performance, revealing a completely new side to the musical world of Ken Woods & The Old Blue Gang.
Commenting on the new single, Ken Woods shares, “I’ve always thought that the most interesting artists know how to make you both laugh and cry. My favourite filmmakers, from David Lynch and the Cohen Brothers back to Billy Wilder Alfred Hitchcock, all knew importance of fun in art. To me, this song is just pure fun. Some days, we need permission to smile and be carefree, and this is music for days like that.” The track also offers a window into what’s next for the band, with the single set to appear on their forthcoming album Older and Bluer: The Old Blue Gang Rides Again, due for release in the autumn, but before that, fans can look forward to a special vinyl edition of Silent Spike arriving next month, featuring exclusive new material.
