For more than three decades, David Gray has been one of the UK’s most enduring musical voices as a songwriter whose decorated career has delivered truly cherished music. From a struggling artist recording in spare rooms and small studios to creating one of the most iconic albums of a generation, David Gray has become a beloved singer-songwriter who’s charmed millions of listeners around the world.
Born in England and raised in Wales, he first arrived in the early 1990s as part of the UK’s growing singer-songwriter movement when his early records found critical acclaim but modest sales and for years he hovered in that space between recognition and obscurity. Yet through it all, there was a sense of purpose in his work, a belief that music could still carry something personal and profound and that belief came to full fruition in 1998, when he independently released White Ladder, the album that would change everything.
A self-funded, home-recorded project soon became a global phenomenon; initially released on his own label after parting ways with major industry backing, White Ladder found its audience gradually before blossoming into a cultural touchstone. Songs like “Babylon,” “This Year’s Love” and “Please Forgive Me” became soundtracks to weddings, breakups and moments of quiet self-reflection. By 2002, White Ladder had topped the UK Albums Chart and gone on to become the biggest-selling record of all time in Ireland, outselling U2, ABBA and The Beatles.

Now, in 2026, David Gray revisits another defining era of his career with Nightjar, a companion album to 2005’s Life in Slow Motion. Set for release on the 27th of March via Bella Figura Music, Nightjar opens a new window into one of his most creatively charged periods. Comprising 19 previously unheard songs written and recorded during the same sessions as Life in Slow Motion, the album unveils an extended creative universe, a document of a time when David was simultaneously unraveling and rebuilding.
The project follows the 20th anniversary reissue of Life in Slow Motion, which arrived in late 2025 as the album’s first-ever vinyl edition, complete with unreleased demos and alternate takes. The first single lifted from the upcoming record, “When I Fall in Love,” feels emblematic of the spirit of his transitional period; after the exhaustive touring cycle that followed White Ladder’s success, he returned home to a life completely transformed. “We were almost three years on the road,” he recalls. “My father had passed away in the midst of that campaign, and then, shortly after I got home, my wife gave birth to our first child in somewhat traumatic circumstances. I was also now a successful, famous, and wealthy man with the world apparently at my feet. It was a lot to make sense of.”
Intimate, reflective and subtly defiant in its simplicity, “When I Fall in Love” flows with soft rhythmic sway and disarming vocal performance to deliver a delightful folk-driven pop experience that’s memorable and emotive from start to finish. Across three decades, David Gray has remained a revered figure in British songwriting, not through reinvention for its own sake, but through the courage to stay true to what moves him. With Nightjar, he’s se to expand his past, reminding listeners that even after all these years, his songs still feel like letters written directly to the human heart.
