Raised in Wellington, New Zealand, singer-songwriter Hana Piranha seemed destined for a very different life; the daughter of a Catholic priest, her early years followed a classically musical path, informed by structure and tradition. Yet somewhere along the way, she broke from the script and instead of concert halls and orchestral scores, she found her voice in the shadows of alternative rock, a darker space where beauty and aggression collide into a divergence that’s defined her ever since.
Now based in London, Hana Piranha has spent the last decade making her presence known in the UK’s alternative rock scene, crafting music that’s equally delicate and forceful, poetic and feral. Her sound is entirely her own, laying down a fusion of emotional intensity and sharp, articulate lyricism that transforms disarray into catharsis. Backed by her bandmates Jim Beck, Andrew Lane and Mishkin Fitzgerald, she’s built a catalogue that’s struck a chord both for its ferocity and its profound thematic context.
Her debut single “Back Again” arrived in 2016 like a warning shot and since then, Hana Piranha’s discography has expanded into a cinematic body of work, where vulnerability cuts as deep as distortion. Her 2023 full-length record Wingspan, released via the Not Saints label, marked an emphatic moment with a record that distilled her strengths into a critically acclaimed release.

Now, with her brand new single titled “Valentine,” Hana Piranha takes another another step into the shadows with a track that serves as the first window into her forthcoming Heart of Darkness EP, a project that’s set to venture further into the tangled territories of desire, obsession and moral ambiguity. True to its title, “Valentine” explores the intoxicating moment when attraction strikes like a curse, that split-second recognition of something, or someone, who could consume you and the reckless curiosity that compels you to let it happen anyway.
Across six transportive minutes, the song revolves around a hypnotic push and pull where marching rhythms bounce, intricate guitars twang and atmospheric synths swirl beneath breathy vocals that teeter between invitation and warning. The hook is immediately catchy, yet laced with unnerving tension, luring listeners into the same trap it describes, seductive in its simplicity and unsettling in its undertones, it’s a stunning display of Hana’s knack for wrapping dark tales in alluring melodies.
Dashed with slick instrumental flourishes, shrouded in a consuming sonic atmosphere and led by Hana’s siren-like vocal work, “Valentine” sees Hana Piranha and her band craft a mesmeric and truly gripping musical experience. With the Heart of Darkness EP set to drop later this year, fans will have much to look forward to from this exciting alternative talent as she wades through murky waters to conjure yet more arresting musical moments.
