Rising from the underground of Melbourne’s alternative music scene, Dinosaur Beard have become one of the city’s most intriguing and distinctive new acts. The duo made up of singer-songwriter Adam Finnegan and bassist April Bray have spent the last few years steadily building a sonic world that feels at once intellectual and impactful, blending post punk aesthetic with enveloping atmospherics and philosophical context.
Their sound exists in overlap where melody meets meaning, threading emotion, psychology and spirituality through an ever-shifting framework of experimental rock. Formed in 2019, Dinosaur Beard first announced their arrival with “Dialect Drum,” a debut single that immediately turned heads for its mix of post punk textures and sharp rhythmic edges, hinting at their creative potential via a pairing of light and dark that would come to define their sonic vision.
Over the following years, the band continued to impress with their debut EP Water Signs in 2023, while their ability to balance atmosphere and intellect has drawn praise from international critics, who’ve highlighted their sound as both nostalgic and forward-thinking. After a short creative pause, the duo re-emerged last year with a trio of singles, “Frida Kahlo,” “Alchemy” and “Truth Arises,” each of which showcased a slightly different shade of their developing sound.

Now, Dinosaur Beard keep that momentum up in 2026 and continue their musical adventure with “Symbology of Teeth,” a song that ventures even further into the psychological and spiritual landscapes that define their writing. The track explores the idea of awakening through loss, the painful but transformative process that occurs when life’s certainties collapse and all that remains is the essence of being. It’s a song about endings that also gestures toward beginnings, tracing the fine line between destruction and renewal with a poignant grace.
Brought in by the sweep of a spinning record, the gentle strum of clean guitar chords and plod of warm bass notes forms a woozy soundscape as the mellow vocal leads glide in to craft a dreamy indie rock soundscape. Flowing with smooth melodies, the subtly punchy shuffle of drums and twang of guitar notes adds intricate energy as the expressive vocals ring out above, resulting in an engaging and wholly absorbing jam.
Peppered with airy synth textures and propelled by a steady rhythmic sway, swirling vocal layers float together to cast a stunning finale that’s sure to leave a lasting impression of the song with listeners. Hitting the ground running this year, Dinosaur Beard continue to expand the sphere of their sound and their philosophy while building a world of their own where music becomes a mirror for the mind and a map for the soul.
