Based in Newcastle, Australia, Mangy Mutt is a voice as unique and arresting as the landscapes that surround him. Part poet, part storyteller and musician, he’s built a world that feels at once enduring and current, taking shape where myth meets the modern world, humour brushes against heartbreak and every lyric drips with real experience.
Before Mangy Mutt ever set foot in a recording studio, words were already his refuge and years spent writing poetry gradually built up a place where language became a means of survival, an attempt to order the disarray of real life. That context still defines his songwriting, offering truth-telling sharpened by wit and soaked in melancholy and when he sings, it cuts deep because it’s never trying to be tidy.
Mangy Mutt’s world is one of contradictions; poetic yet blunt, cinematic yet unvarnished, equally defiant and emotive. His project stands at the crossroads of poetry and rock, where folk stylings meets emotional confrontation to craft music that acknowledges pain but uses satire and determination as survival tools. Working alongside producer Gareth Hudson at Newcastle’s Hazy Cosmic Jive Studio, Mangy Mutt spent nearly two years creating that world into something tangible and across an intense 18-month creative stretch, the pair tore through almost twenty songs, dismantling and rebuilding them until every note felt honest.

The result of that endeavour is The Unresolvable Disillusionment of Matthew David Bowman, a debut EP that captures the spirit of what Mangy Mutt stands for. Thematically, the EP is about sitting with dissonance and the acceptance of uncertainty, captured across six tracks that flow through a range of moods and vibes cut with superb musicianship and memorable songwriting.
Opened by the hazy buzz of gritty guitar tones on “Old Familiar Game,” the bounce of organ stabs and stead taps of percussion forms a smokey scene as Mangy Mutt’s expressive voice glides in to thread gravelly leads. Dashed with wah-drenchd lead guitar and lively instrumental flourishes, it’s a groove-focused jam that’s timeless, original and wholly absorbing all at once. “Not Even Love Stayed” takes a turn towards a more tender scene, offering a heartfelt country-tinged ballad formed by stripped back instrumentation and emotive vocal performance.
“Leave The Light On” rolls with downtempo rhythm and atmospheric instrumentation, casting a subtly haunting soundscape capped by brooding vocals and wrapped in an engrossing fabric of moody sound. “Land Of Make Believe” pairs elegant piano backing and smooth vocals, developing with the taps of drums, pulse of bass and intricate flicker of guitar notes to craft a dreamy pop-inflected rock experience.
With “Count Your Blessings,” he leans into an upbeat scene of pattering percussion, graceful piano-led arrangement and alluring vocals, laying up in the chorus to deliver a stunning piece of catchy music. Closing the EP with “Cast A Shadow On The Sun,” Mangy Mutt delivers another highly affecting musical moment that concludes his stellar EP with a memorable and moving sound of aching vocals, poignant lyricism and delicate instrumental work.
