Japanese-British collective Re:O have been walking their own path in the musical world with a sound that brings together the ferocity of metalcore and industrial rock with the theatrical beauty of J-pop, the cinematic qualities of dark pop and the aesthetics of cyberpunk. Fans have affectionately dubbed it Japancore, a term that captures the project’s identity of fierce. futuristic and emotionally compelling music.
Formed by Rio Suyama, James Wright, James ‘J’ Stevens, Jon Roberts and Alex Carli, Re:O first appeared in 2020 with a debut single that immediately planted them on the map of essential new acts. Their music felt global in its outlook, the impact and melody of Japanese alternative music colliding with the grit and aggression of Western modern rock and since starting out, they’ve only expanded that vision.
With each new track, they’ve secured a reputation as one of the most adventurous and ambitious acts on the rise, a band as concerned with emotion as they are with sonic intensity. Following the success of their last single “Crimson Desire,” Re:O now hits the ground running in 2026 with a new single titled “Reverie” which marks a turning point not just in sound, but in sentiment; it’s a track that signals a recalibration of tone that swaps pure aggression for bittersweet reflection without losing an ounce of sonic punch.

Penned entirely in Japanese for the first time since 2021, “Reverie” sees the band exploring the delicate overlap of memory and connection. It recounts the tale of missing someone who once defined your world, a friend, a lover, a constant presence now gone, fading from view as time moves forward. The imagery at the song’s thematic heart is hauntingly poetic, snow falling into your hand only to melt away moments later, a symbol of how human connections, however precious, are fragile and impermanent.
Brought in by the twinkle of delicate instrumental chimes, the arrangement erupts with driving guitars and punching drums before simmering down into a moody alternative rock scene as Rio Suyama’s expressive vocals float above carrying lines in Japanese. Surging into an explosive chorus of charging instrumentation, pounding drums and belted vocals which soar above to deliver emphatic melodic hooks, it’s a spectacular showcase of the band’s songwriting talent and performance flair.
Dashed with moments of gripping instrumental flourishes and raucous metal-inflected riffs, “Reverie” presents a truly engrossing listening experience from start to finish. Opening an exciting new chapter in their thrilling musical story, Re:O are showing no signs of slowing down on their unstoppable rise in the alternative music sphere and we can’t wait to see what they’ve got in store for the rest of 2026 and beyond.
