Born in Chicago and now based in New York, Eleri Ward has spent the last few years creating a highly original sound that draws from acoustic intimacy, theatrical flair and an adventurous desire to experiment. The music she forges lands where indie folk becomes a starting point before moving between stillness and scale, holding onto something timeless while continuously shifting its form.
From the works of artists like Caroline Polachek, Sufjan Stevens, Lianne La Havas and Andrew Bird, Eleri’s inspirations are diverse and wide-ranging. Her earliest recognition however, came through her reimaginings of Stephen Sondheim’s work, a project that highlighted both her technical talent and her knack for reinterpretation. Those recordings introduced her as an artist capable of reshaping familiar material into something newly compelling but it was with her original music that her voice began to fully take shape.
Since her 2020 debut single “The Girl in the Backseat,” she’s built a body of work across singles and EPs that leans into emotional detail and sonic texture with equal focus. Praise from The New York Times, Forbes and American Theatre Magazine, alongside millions of streams, has positioned her as a rising figure within the indie music space. Last year, her output expanded significantly with her debut full-length record Internal Rituals and across twelve tracks, the album explored themes of reflection, growth and perspective, framed through ethereal arrangements and vocal performances that felt at once controlled and hypnotic.

Now Eleri Ward returns in 2026 with new material, bringing us her latest single titled “Will I Be the Sun,” a song that sits in the space between doubt and hope. The track was written in the aftermath of a period of identity shedding and within that context, “Will I Be the Sun” becomes less about answers and more about process. It captures a moment of standing at a threshold, balancing humility with a sense of self-reclamation.
With the soft pulse of piano, Eleri’s tender vocals float in to place drifting melodies and picture painting lyrics into the stripped back folk setting. Gently taking flight with quivering emotion and ethereal aesthetic, the song soars with dreamy instrumentation and a dazzling arrangement of overlapping vocal layers which both stack up and weave alongside each other, crafting an enveloping alternative folk pop soundscape that’s guaranteed to leave a lasting impression with listeners.
Swelling into a consuming crescendo before floating back down to a delicate finale, “Will I Be the Sun” sees Eleri Ward return after her successful debut LP with an incredible new release. As she opens an exciting new chapter in her artistic story, we can’t wait to see what Eleri Ward has in store for the rest of 2026 and beyond.
