In Barcelona, a project known as Cosmic Madness has taken shape from a period of reflection and emotional turbulence. Created by Spanish-born artist Mateo, the project sits at the crossroads of rock intensity and philosophical inquiry, using music as a space for exploration, where existential questions and personal experiences collide.
Before beginning the project, Mateo spent years working outside the spotlight, including a period managing a rock bar. During that time, life progressed in ways that eventually took him toward deeper reflection and after an unexpected heartbreak and a stretch of personal uncertainty, music gradually became a form of therapy. Cosmic Madness appeared not as a carefully planned concept, but as an outlet for thoughts that had been building beneath the surface.
Mateo’s output as Cosmic Madness often wrestle with questions about consciousness, meaning and the human search for purpose, all while confronting uncertainty head-on. The result is a sound built on tension, where heavy guitar distortion and industrial textures mirror the context embedded within the lyrics. The music moves between the organic and the mechanical, echoing the overlap between human feeling and the increasingly technological world surrounding it.
Unveiling the project in September last year, he made his entrance with the debut single “Domain Change,” which he’s since followed up with a string of well-received tracks. Now the project moves into a new phase with the debut full-length record titled Love in an Existential Crux. Written largely in isolation, the album developed through a process that Mateo describes as similar to a therapeutic session, where ideas and emotions were allowed to form without restriction.

Thematically, the record explores the experience of existing without clear context; it asks why people possess a conscience, why meaning can sometimes feel absent, and how individuals attempt to handle that uncertainty. Kicked off by his first single “Domain Change,” the album starts with atmospheric textures before the flicker of lead guitar, steady beat and smooth vocals form a grooving rock outing that rolls with slick riffs and catchy hooks. Surging into an epic chorus that jumps with driving energy, gripping vocal leads and profound lyricism, it’s an exhilarating jam from start to finish.
“Thunderstorm” flows with mellow vocals and clean chords, leaning into a blissful scene before the arrangement launches with crashing drums and crunching guitar tones, taking listeners on an engrossing rock voyage that floats through moments of mesmeric sonic dreaminess and rousing rock energy. “Can’t Follow” brings bouncy rhythmic energy and gritty rock n’ roll vibes capped by expressive vocals to forge an engaging soundscape packed full of twists and turns.
Other highlights on the record include tracks like “Wait a Minute,” with its stomping rhythm and infectious vocals elements that dance atop fuzzy guitar tones and intricate lead flourishes to serve up an incredible showcase of his songwriting flair and performance panache. “IDK” frames his writing in a funk-tinged setting where twanging guitar rhythms and shuffling drums form a lively backdrop for dynamic vocal work to shine throughout.
Closing track, “Fine,” which revisits the frustrations and uncertainties explored throughout the record, settles into a fragile acceptance wrapped up in a delicate folk-inflected sound where elegant instrumentation and intimate vocals craft a moving finale to Cosmic Madness’ sensational debut LP. Cosmic Madness ultimately frames the album as music for listeners who feel overwhelmed by constant internal noise, offering a space where existential questions remain open, but the act of confronting them becomes its own form of understanding.
