Hailing from Palm Beach in Florida, Tellus Mater is the latest chapter in the career of singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Todd Rouse, whose experience across decades of performance and recording has shaped a sound that blends alternative rock, pop and cinematic atmosphere. With Tellus Mater, Todd channels that background into something reflective and emotionally driven, crafting songs that balance impactful production with meaningful storytelling.
His musical history stretches back well before the creation of Tellus Mater; earlier in his career he gained recognition through the band East of Gideon, a project that placed him firmly within the rock sphere of its time. The group’s momentum led to performances at venues including the legendary Whisky a Go Go, a stage long associated with artists making their mark in the rock world. During that period, East of Gideon also signed a six-album deal with JRS Records, marking a major step forward in Todd’s early career.
The band’s rise brought him into contact with some of the era’s most influential acts, playing alongside artists such as Lenny Kravitz, Nirvana and Rage Against the Machine. Along the way, he also collaborated with renowned producers including Butch Vig and Greg Ladanyi, experiences that helped shape his understanding of studio production and songwriting. As Tellus Mater, he draws from his musical origins, transforming earlier experiences into a more reflective artistic direction. The project reveals an artist who’s moved through the highs and challenges of the music industry and arrived with a focus on emotional context.
Making his official artistic entrance last November, he unveiled his original sonic vision with the debut single “Alone With You,” which he quickly followed up with singles two and three. Now he delivers the fullest showcase of his sound with his debut eponymous EP, Tellus Mater, a five-track release which represents the most complete expression of the project so far. Across the EP, cinematic production techniques brush up against with rock and indie pop elements, allowing the songs to land with both emotional intimacy and expansive sound.

The EP was produced and recorded in the UK by Matt Cotterill and working outside Todd’s home environment introduced a new perspective into the sessions, adding an international dimension that subtly colours the finished recordings. Opened by his first single “Alone With You,” the gentle strum of acoustic guitar, steady rustle of drums and airy atmospheric textures combine as Todd’s expressive voice glides in to cast a dreamy scene of rock-tinged indie pop music. Flowing with memorable melodic songwriting, charming vocal performance and intricate lead guitar flickers, it’s a superb display of his alluring and highly original sound.
“Gone” drifts into focus with warm piano notes, bubbling instrumental tones and softly tapped percussion as Todd’s emotive voice floats above to craft a delicate indie pop soundscape full of heartfelt songwriting and tender aesthetic. “You Needed Love” pairs stripped back piano backing and aching vocal delivery to form a moving musical moment that gradually expands with the hazy crunch of washy guitar tones, marching drums and graceful strings, melting into an absorbing and highly affecting listening experience. Progressing into a jazz-tinged sound where smokey trumpet lines swirl around Todd’s voice, it’s an utterly engrossing song that’s memorable and powerful throughout.
With “Seems To Me,” the tone shifts with bright acoustic guitar backing and buoyant vocals carrying hopeful lyricism, gliding with breezy rhythmic sway and surging with charging guitars and punching drums to deliver an epic pop rock anthem. “Our Last Fight” closes the EP with a delicate outing that rolls with soft key tones and intimate vocals, offering a soulful finale to conclude the stellar debut Tellus Mater EP in spectacular fashion.
