Originally from North Wales and now based in London, the artist known as Headmaster has spent decades shaping a creative identity that sits alongside a life of responsibility and leadership. As a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, his work is instilled with a sense of reflection that comes from experience, drawing on the complexities of human emotion while remaining based in melody and structure.
His move to London in the 1990s opened an early chapter, arriving with the band Firetown and stepping into a city defined by its constant motion and musical diversity. That environment became part of his creative origins, offering space to develop his songwriting voice while exploring the wider landscape of collaboration and performance. Over time, that voice began to shift toward something more personal, eventually leading to his solo work.
Outside of music, Headmaster occupies a role that might seem far removed from the creative sphere; as CEO and Executive Headteacher of the Hertswood Academy Trust, his day-to-day life is shaped by leadership and education. As an artist, his music reflects an awareness of the challenges people face and that connection extends into his mission for supporting mental and physical health charities, including Herts Mind Network and Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice.
First unveiling his solo sonic vision in 2020 with his debut EP, Darjemin, he returned last year with a string of singles and these releases set the platform for a more ambitious undertaking that would define the next phase of his work. That ambition takes shape in the Seasons tetralogy, a four-part series of albums released in alignment with the meteorological calendar. Beginning with Summer on June 1st, followed by Autumn on September 1st and Winter on December 1st, the project now reaches its conclusion with Seasons Spring, Vol.4.

The final instalment brings the series to a close with a focus on renewal and new beginnings and as the concluding chapter, it carries a sense of resolution without feeling definitive, reflecting the idea that endings are often just another point in an ongoing cycle. Firetown’s involvement in performing many of the tracks adds another context to the project, bridging past and present in a way that reinforces the sense of continuity.
The seven-track release starts with the bright synth tones and steady snap of drums on opening track “Spring to Life,” crafting an uplifting synth rock jam that flows with jangly guitar textures and compelling vocal leads which ring out above. “Didn’t Even Know Their Name,” follows with the soft patter of drums and gentle plucks of guitar capped by tender vocals, forming a misty pop rock outing that’s charming, moving and memorable all at once.
“April Days” pairs catchy vocal lines with picture painting lyricism as an atmospheric arrangement of delicate piano and a sweeping blend of synth and guitar swells around Headmaster’s alluring voice. Other highlights on the record include tracks like “Slowly Heaven” which sets the scene with visions of rain smell on ground as the track rolls with the crisp punch of percussion and impassioned vocal performance, serving up an absorbing and highly engaging listening experience.
Closing the release with “The Willow Tree,” the lively twang of guitar chords, pulsing bass, rustling drums and distant vocalisations glides into an invigorating indie rock scene brimming with delicate melodic flair and storytelling songwriting. In bringing the Seasons project to its conclusion, Headmaster completes a body of work that feels equally structured and open-ended, offering an enjoyable listening experience while completing an incredible artistic statement.
