Sven Curth is a singer-songwriter, guitarist and banjo player whose work exists somewhere between discipline and curiosity, driven equally by a desire to develop his talents and an adventurous spirit. Across four full-length records, he’s built a catalogue that moves freely between genres where his songwriting leans into everything from social commentary to humour, from reflective observations to moments of outright silliness, always driven by storytelling that feels both thoughtful and honest.
That openness extends to his influences, which stretch across a wide and often unexpected spectrum; from the grit and character of blues to the looseness of swing, from the story-focused style of Americana to more experimental edges, Sven Curth has never confined himself to a single lane.
His music feels like a blend styles that reflects a deep respect for tradition while refusing to settle into it too comfortably. It’s this tension that gives his work its character, a sense that anything might happen next and often does. Now, with his fifth album, he steps into something new with Live at your local Waterhole marking the first time he’s captured his music in a live band setting, a shift that feels both natural and subtly significant.
In a moment where technology continues to reshape how music is made and consumed, this record leans fully into the opposite impulse. It’s based in presence, in musicians sharing space, in the small imperfections and spontaneous moments that only exist when people come together to play in real time. Invited to take part in a concert series, Sven decided it was time to bring other players into the fold. Drummer Kyle Murray and bassist Colin Dehond, both past acquaintances, joined him for the performance, forming what would become The Sven Curth Trio.

As they continued to play together, the project began to grow organically, with other musicians stepping in along the way. For this particular recording, keys player Chris Carballeira joined the group, adding another element to the sound despite having only a single rehearsal before the show. Recorded on a warm August evening at The Waterhole in Saranac Lake, New York, the record captures a specific moment in time, a gathering of musicians and an audience sharing the same room, the same energy.
The songs themselves reflect the breadth of Sven Curth’s musical identity and ppening track “How Come?” gets things going with a stripped-back Americana feel. Bouncy rhythms, lightly gritty guitars and expressive vocal leads combine to craft an upbeat jam that rolls with catchy writing and intricate instrumentation. From there, the album moves through shifting moods and textures, “Rain” brings a more pensive blues vibe with the downtempo rustle of drums and jazz-tinged guitar work, while “My baby hates me when she’s drinking” introduces a faster, more playful energy, built on quick picking and a sense of humour that shines throughout the track.
“Wonder What” stretches out into something more immersive, allowing space for improvisation and emotional writing to take over. With “Let There Be Light,” the soft rhythmic sway of tapped percussion and breezy guitars are capped by Sven’s rich vocals as he threads alluring melodies into the delicate musical fabric.
Closing the record with “Go Away, Cloudy Day,” the laid back flutter of muted guitar notes is met by mellow vocal layers and grooving energy to craft an uplifting slice of hopeful music peppered with superb instrumental flourishes. With Live at your local Waterhole, The Sven Curth Trio presents a reminder of what happens when music is allowed to breathe, offering a charming musical work that’s sure to be enjoyed and cherished by listeners everywhere.
