A new study comparing the price of live entertainment across the UK suggests that the headline cost of a ticket doesn’t always tell the full story, particularly when it comes to concerts.
The research, released by London Theatre Direct, introduces the UK Entertainment Value Index, which compares 12 popular ticketed activities using a single metric: cost per minute. Instead of simply looking at ticket prices, the index divides the average ticket cost by the typical duration of the event to calculate how much each minute of entertainment actually costs.

Live music concerts rank among the most expensive entertainment experiences in the index, averaging 71.4p per minute — significantly higher than theatre musicals at 40.5p per minute and opera at 33.7p per minute.
One of the more surprising comparisons comes from sport: Premier League football averages 56.7p per minute, meaning it works out 40% more expensive per minute than theatre musicals, despite football tickets often appearing cheaper upfront.
At the opposite end of the scale, cinema is the most affordable option, costing 7.2p per minute, followed by paid museums and historic attractions at 8.1p per minute.
Overall, the research points to a clear divide between lower-cost leisure activities — including cinema, museums and comedy — and premium live events such as theatre, concerts and major sporting fixtures.
Johan Oosterveld, CEO at London Theatre Direct, said: “People tend to compare activities by headline price, but that can be misleading. This index doesn’t try to judge what’s ‘best’. It asks a narrower question: how much time does your ticket buy you – and how does that change the comparisons we assume are obvious?”
The report notes that the index should be seen as a planning guide rather than a judgement on cultural value, and does not account for factors such as travel costs, food and drink, seat location or dynamic pricing.
