Brisbane-based duo STAHR are building something that feels both powerful and considered, a project shaped by contrast as much as accessible sonic output. Fronted by Sam Syrah and Gracie Lou, the pair position themselves somewhere between dream pop and desert rock, but those labels only go so far; their sound leans into a tension of rock grit pushed up against warm pop textures, soulful undertones cutting through distortion creating songs that land with impact.
On one side, there’s the weight of alternative rock, on the other, there’s a more fluid, melodic style, something softer but no less engaging. Together, it forms a space that feels open rather than fixed, moving through genres and pulling from different directions without fully aligning with any of them.
Since stepping out in March 2024 with their debut single “The Heat,” they’ve continued to release new material while building a presence on stage. Support slots alongside Boy & Bear, Olympia, and Jacob Fitzgerald have marked a steady climb, alongside a sold-out headline show that signals a growing audience. That sense of accumulation now comes into focus on their brand new debut EP titled BLIP, a five-track release that lands as both a snapshot and a statement, capturing the band’s sonic direction while framing the ideas that sit underneath it.
Thematically, the EP looks back at experiences that once felt overwhelming, disruptions, emotional swings, ego spikes, internal reckonings and reframes them through distance. What once dominated becomes a footnote, but the memory of its intensity still lasts. STAHR lean into that tension, questioning how something so temporary can carry so much weight and how perspective reshapes meaning over time. If these moments are blips, they are anything but subtle.

Opening track “Mother Aura” jumps straight in with the snap of crisp drums as distorted guitar lines and punchy rhythms establish a sense of swaggering rock groove before the vocals enter with a kind of detached calm. That contrast doesn’t hold for long and as the track builds, the delivery shifts, opening into something more expansive as it moves into the chorus, tracing the arc of a wild night out captured via stacks of driving guitars and soaring vocal leads.
“Loving Friend” shifts the focus, bringing Sam Syrah’s vocals to the front over a grinding, pulsing rhythm. The density in the arrangement, gradually develops from smokey desert rock vibes into a wall of sound where split vocals ring out above crunching instrumentation. “Isn’t It Fun” follows, framing a social commentary around digital interaction in a hazy rock soundscape that rolls with mellow rhythm and atmospheric vocal leads, rising to a rousing chorus that’s sure to leave a lasting impression.
With “Be The Light” the band introduces a different pace with a downtempo moment that pulls back from the frenetic energy of the surrounding tracks without losing its scale. A bittersweet scene takes shape as a hypnotic lullaby that still carries an anthemic presence.
It acts as a pause rather than a break, a recalibration before the EP closes with “Yours Tonight.” the final track launches back into chaos, driven by grungy guitars and a stomping energy, distilling the thoughts of an artist into a lively alternative rock jam packed full of danceable rhythms and angsty vocal performance. Loud but observant, glamorous but gritty, BLIP captures STAHR in the process of defining themselves without locking into a single shape.
