Working under the name DownTown Mystic, Robert Allen is an American rock artist whose focus has stayed fixed on a truly enduring sound. Growing up immersed in records from rock’s golden years, today he creates music that carries the echoes of history while offering something new.
Since first making an entrance with the debut album Standing Still back in 2011, the project has developed over the years with multiple impressive releases, building a catalogue that folds in decades of influence. Threads of classic American rock are stitched into the textures of analogue recording and all of it melts into a sound that sits somewhere between eras.
Striking a chord with listeners around the world, DownTown Mystic’s music has become a familiar presence across film and television, appearing in more than 250 TV shows and multiple films. From The Voice on NBC to American Pickers on the History Channel and across networks like MTV, CNN and National Geographic, that reach confirms the wide appeal of his sonic output.
Now Robert brings us the latest DownTown Mystic release with the new EP titled On E Street (Remix), a work that feels more like a reactivation. At the centre of it is a collaboration that carries its own kind of impact, bringing in E Street Band members Max Weinberg and Garry Tallent as the rhythm section. Their presence alone shifts the context, not just because of who they are, but because of how rarely they record together outside of their work with Bruce Springsteen.

These recordings trace back to a pivotal period, created at a time when Max and Garry were also involved in shaping Born In The USA. Returning to Shorefire Studios, where the original sessions took place, Robert and engineer Joe DeMaio revisited those moments to reframe them.
Opening things up, “Way To Know” arrives reimagined through what’s been described as a “Bruceified” lens, offering a perspective on the current state of the world. Jumping straight into a bouncy rock scene, the steady punch of drums maintains a lively forward motion as twanging layers of guitars underpin smooth vocal leads carrying instantly memorable hooks, resulting in an epic rock jam that’s catchy and energising throughout.
“And You Know Why” leans into an emotional sphere, crafting a aid back soundscape that flows with the soft pulse of bass, taps of drums and intricate guitar tones as tender vocals hover above to delivery poignant lyricism via moving melodies. “Hard Enough” holds onto its position as a straight-up rocker, driven by an invigorating groove and jangly guitars to serve up a sensational blues rock anthem that’s guaranteed to put a smile on your face.
The EP doesn’t stop at revisiting existing material and “Sometimes Wrong” appears here remastered by Leon Zervos, adding another facet of refinement, while the instrumental “And You Know Why (TV Mix)” shifts the focus entirely onto atmosphere and arrangement, offering a charming outing that puts the band’s musicianship panache on full display. The instrumental TV Mix of “Way To Know” then closes the EP, offering a full-circle moment to conclude the release on an upbeat note, allowing the lead guitar work in particular to shine.
