Hailing from Rennes in France, Harbinger is the solo electronic project of Geoffroy, a former drummer who’s traded the physical energy of live percussion for the intricate architecture of machines. This shift in medium has flourished into a live electronic setup built around synths and sequencers where rhythm is no longer struck but programmed, shaped and reimagined in real time. Since starting the endeavour in 2020, Harbinger has forged a sound that’s at once nostalgic and cutting edge, based in the warmth of analogue textures while reaching toward something more cinematic and exploratory.
Harbinger’s sound exists in the overlap between movement and stillness, between the mechanical aesthetic of sequenced patterns and the emotional magnetism of melody. Inspired by pioneering French artists from Jean-Michel Jarre through Kavinsky to Daft Punk, Geoffroy channels a distinctly retro-futuristic energy that feels informed by the past but ready to discover something new.
Before stepping into this solo identity, Geoffroy made his mark as the drummer of Metro Verlaine, forming his musical talents in live performance and physical rhythm. That background hasn’t disappeared; it simmer beneath the surface of Harbinger’s productions and even in its most synthetic moments, the music carries an organic quality driven by human intention as much as machine logic.
The project’s first major statement arrived in 2024 with the EP Runner Spheres, a release that introduced listeners to Harbinger’s sonic world while also extending it into a visual dimension through a live session filmed at the Radôme, a former satellite reception centre. Now, with the arrival of his highly anticipated sophomore EP titled Wavesyzer via Rennes label Night Night Records, Harbinger expands that vision further.

Framed as an immersive night-drive through space, the release leans into atmosphere and motion, guiding listeners through shifting moods and textures across six enveloping instrumental tracks. Opening the release with the airy synth tones on “Nova,” Harbinger sets up a spacey sonic voyage that develops with the taps of crisp percussion before the punch of booming beats and driving bass lines injects a gripping forward motion. Rolling with impactful rhythms and capped by the flutter of bright synth flickers, it’s an epic synth jam that’s engrossing and original in equal measure.
“Solar” arrives with a hazy warmth, its softly swelling synths drifting over a laid-back groove that feels comforting and expansive before the hop of stuttered bass lines builds up the rhythmic energy. Propelled by mellow dance vibes and tinged with moments of sweeping atmosphere, it’s a superb showcase of Harbinger’s creativity and production flair.
In contrast, “Krelus” flows with a pulsing energy, an overcharged synthwave outing built for movement, bright and kinetic, resulting in a playful musical moment packed full of infectious groove. “Phobos” shifts the tone once again, blending chill electronica with melancholic textures to create something more reflective while still presenting a beat-driven scene. “Hyperion” brings softly bubbling synth elements, progressing with rattling percussion and zappy synth shots to cast an immersive listening experience from start to finish.
Closing the EP with “Titan,” the shimmer of resonating textures and jittery taps of percussion form an intriguing atmosphere as stacks of competing synth tones tumble into place to serve up a truly transportive finale to Harbinger’s sensational second EP. With Wavesyzer, Harbinger continues to go from strength to strength as an essential name in instrumental electronic music and we can’t wait to see what else he’s got in store for the rest of 2026 and beyond.
