Kenneth Woods has been on a decorated sonic adventure within the classical world as a conductor, composer and cellist operating across several decades. With more than fifty acclaimed releases and recognition from major publications, his career has long been tethered to the discipline and structure of orchestral music. But simmer within that carefully crafted exterior, there was always a different energy waiting to surface, something less contained and altogether more emphatic.
That shift has now taken form in his reinvention as Ken Woods and The Old Blue Gang, a move that sees him step away from the formalities of the concert hall and into a new musical space. Trading the baton for a guitar and embracing a sound shaped by Americana traditions, a stark contrast on paper, but the transition has resulted in a truly worthwhile endeavour. This project leans into rougher textures drawn from blues, folk, country and jazz, creating music that feels influenced by history while still striding forward.
The name The Old Blue Gang was borrowed from a notorious group tied to the Hells Canyon Massacre, arriving loaded with historical and cultural tension. Their debut album Silent Spike, released last July, marked the beginning of this new direction and was met with thoroughly deserved critical acclaim and since then Ken Woods & The Old Blue Gang has kept up the momentum with a string of impressive singles.

Now, their journey leads toward American Catastrophe, a forthcoming record that stretches its thematic reach across decades, tracing a line through American life from around 1980 onward while reflecting the shift in vision as The Electric Reckoning. At the centre of this next chapter is “Eyes Shut,” the latest single and the closing track on the upcoming album, landing as a moment of reflection. Some of the material on American Catastrophe dates back as far as 1990, giving the album a long historical arc and “Eyes Shut” feels like a point where those threads come together.
Presenting an epic seven and a half minute outing, “Eyes Shut” glides with laid back taps of cymbal as bright piano chords and smokey guitar notes form a steady forward motion. With Ken’s rich voice floating in above layers of alluring backing vocals, he casts transportive storytelling lyrics into the absorbing soundscape as intricate lead guitars add flashes of classic rock intensity throughout. With shifting rhythms and building energy, the track flows through passages of dancing guitar leads before slowing back down to the mellow march of the verses.
With dashes of Americana, rock and psychedelic vibes, “Eyes Shut” sees Ken Woods and the Electric Reckoning deliver an engrossing musical experience that’s packed full of profound songwriting and musicianship panache. With American Catastrophe set to be released later this year, we can’t wait to see what this constantly developing project has in store next on their utterly captivating artistic voyage.
Commenting on the upcoming album Ken shares, “The new record combines reimaginings of some of my favourite old songs alongside several new ones, which I hope paints a suitably bleak, funny and funky picture of the modern history of America’s decay, corruption and failure. Trust me, it’s more fun than it sounds.”
