Originally hailing from Texas and now based in Florida, Matt Johnson has spent decades building a body of work that speaks quietly but carries a lasting impression. A pianist, composer and educator, his journey stretches back to the 1980s, when encouragement from fellow pianist George Winston first nudged him toward recording his own material. Since that moment, he’s been on a path that’s resulted in more than eighty releases and a global audience drawn to the emotional context of his music.
His relationship with the piano began at just six years old when he showed a natural connection to the instrument, a bond that deepened through years of study, competition and orchestral performance. Those initial experiences shaped not only his technical talnt, but also his confidence in approaching music as expression. He went on to study Piano Performance at undergraduate level before continuing at the New England Conservatory of Music, where he completed a Master’s degree in Jazz Studies and Composition, ultimately finding a voice that would come to sit somewhere between structure and spontaneity.
Often described as “Neo-Romantic,” his music leans into melody and emotional moments and over the years, he’s taken that sound across stages throughout the United States and South America, connecting with audiences through well-received performances. As an educator, Matt has spent years teaching piano, music theory and composition, passing on the same principles that have guided his own development. His versatility also finds him moving between roles in more communal settings, performing on piano, organ and keyboards in both contemporary and traditional services at his local church.

Now, that perspective comes into focus through his latest release titled“Mother’s Day Proverb,” a single lifted from his Reflections on…The Proverbs of Solomon album. The piece takes inspiration from the ancient wisdom of Proverbs 31, translating its themes into a form that sits somewhere between composition and narration. At twelve minutes in length, it plays out as a “musical audiobook,” blending spoken word passages with piano improvisation to deliver a heartfelt musical experience that’s equally meaningful and meditative.
The track moves through a series of shifting moods, from quiet, reflective moments to more emphatic surges of lively performance. The piano acts as both anchor and guide, carrying the emotional impact of the piece while leaving space for the spoken elements to gently hover above, resulting in a soothing soundscape that showcases Matt’s knack for capturing delicate emotion as well and his incredible musicianship talent.
The intricate interplay between narration and improvisation creates a layered experience that invites the listener to engage on multiple levels. At times, the piano takes the lead, its melodic lines offering a sense of continuity while at others, the spoken word steps forward, basing the piece in its thematic idea. The song also serves as a tribute, honouring mothers around the world through a lens that’s at once personal and widely relatable. With “Mother’s Day Proverb,” Matt Johnson offers something that feels both reflective and forward-looking, a new age style composition that draws on years of experience while remaining open to interpretation.
