Moving between Prague and Key West, the life and work of George Collins stretches across continents and creative disciplines, influenced as much by real experience as by musical expression. A transatlantic storyteller at heart, he operates in multiple worlds at once, writing across rock music, novels and television, all while maintaining a perspective based in thoughtful observation and meaningful reflection. That layered identity feeds directly into his music, where story and melody meet in exciting ways.
Long before stepping out as a solo artist, George was already embedded in a musical environment; during his early career, he played lead guitar in Common Knowledge, a Charlottesville-based band with an Earth, Wind & Fire-style energy, sharing space with musicians who would later become founding members of the Dave Matthews Band. It’s a detail often joked about, but it hints at the prolific nature of his origins. From there, he gradually transitioned into a singer-songwriter, funding his graduate studies by performing three nights a week in local clubs, building a connection to live audiences that still underpins his approach today.
In 2012, at the age of 50, he made a decision that would reshape everything by stepping away from a successful two-decade career as an investment consultant and financial executive. A decade later, George formally introduced himself as a solo recording artist with his debut EP It’s Been a Long Time in 2022, which he followed up in 2024 with his album Songs for Grown-ups. Acoustic versions of his songs soon followed, offering stripped-back interpretations that highlighted the strength of his compositions without the need for embellishment.
Now preparing his upcoming release, a full-length album titled New Ways of Getting Old, George Collins continues to explore the balance between reflection and forward motion. But before that arrives, he offers a different sort of moment with his latest single “My Island Life,” a track that leans into warmth, escapism and shared experience.

Penned during an international songwriting retreat in Spain hosted by The Songwriting Academy of the UK, the track came together under unique circumstances. Collaborating with Kathleen Schoebel from Germany and Boni Awan from the UK and guided by Nashville songwriter Sharon Vaughn, George was tasked with creating a song about travel and favourite places within just a few hours, resulting in something that feels spontaneous and joyous.
Inspired in part by Collins’s connection to Key West, as well as shared experiences of island life, the track flows with an easy sense of movement, its reggae-inflected rhythm and sunlit imagery creating a space that feels both colourful and inviting. Set up by the roll of drums, the track jumps into a buoyant scene of fluttering guitar leads, shimmering instrumental elements and the patter of reggae groove. George’s warm voice enters above the rhythm of skanking guitar chords as swooping female vocals glide alongside his vocal leads, casting a truly delightful musical experience that’s impossible not to love.
With picture painting lyricism, smooth melodies and bright instrumentation, George Collins Band delivers a charming jam that’s guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Across decades, careers and continents, George Collins has continued to develop without losing sight of what matters, delivering magical musical moments that have won over listeners around the world.
Commenting on the new single, George offers, “This song was truly a collaborative effort. What started as a songwriting exercise quickly turned into something special. We all brought our own memories and experiences into it, and that shared energy is what gives the song its warmth and spirit.”
