For decades, C’batch has moved through music with sheer artistic independence and an ever-curious creative vision. Recording under the name C’batch, White Plains-based composer, producer, author and multi-instrumentalist Stephen H. Cumberbatch has built a catalogue that flows across changing eras, developing technology and shifting musical landscapes, while his work has always remained driven by instinct, experimentation and a refusal to be boxed into one creative lane.
That freedom has long been central to his artistic philosophy and while he’s an established ASCAP member with decades of experience behind him, C’batch has consistently chosen a self-directed route, shaping projects according to personal vision. It’s an approach reflected not only in the music itself, but in the infrastructure surrounding it. Back in 1984, alongside Yvette Cumberbatch, he co-founded Stevette Music, Inc., establishing an independent creative base through which to publish, produce and develop work entirely on his own terms.
Instrumentally, C’batch works across guitar, keyboards, synths and samplers, using each as part of a broad emotional vocabulary. His relationship with genre feels similarly open-ended; smooth jazz, ambient soul, cinematic minimalism and electronic textures all drift through his catalogue, not as separate identities but as interconnected emotional languages.
Now, that expansive creative history resurfaces through C’batch Smooth / Rough – The Vault 1, a new double album archival release that revisits one of the most prolific periods of his career while reframing it through a cutting edge lens. The project actively reconstructs and reimagines material from the “Unfinished Business” era, originally developed in collaboration with C’batch & Herring, using modern production techniques to bridge past and present.

Across eighteen tracks, The Vault 1 functions like an excavation of emotional memory, uncovering earlier creative impulses while allowing them to breathe differently in a modern context. Critically acclaimed opening track “Song For God” immediately establishes that atmosphere with a song that revolves around contemplative guitar work and meditative pacing, playing out with a reflective tone. Propelled by the snap of grooving drums and bouncy guitar flickers, the track serves up a shimmering instrumental jam that’s uplifting and soulful from start to finish.
“Round & Round” leans into an elegant scene of dazzling piano work, mellow rhythmic energy and stunning sax leads, casting a dreamy soundscape to get completely swept up by. Tracks like “Let Me Be the One” glide with minimal arrangement where the twinkle of piano and intricate instrumental tones are carried by the steady pulse of grooving drums and bassline.
“Song for Frank G” brings lively disco-tinged vibes with punch drums, popping bass, funky guitar rhythms and stellar sax leads, offering a magical instrumental experience. “Phunk Fusion (With a P.H.D.)” arrives with graceful piano sweeps before the track jumps into an upbeat groove dashed with fluttering guitar work and delightful instrumental flourishes, presenting a danceable moment on the album.
On the second side of the release, tracks like “Just into You” rolls with downtempo groove and smokey instrumentation, laying down a sultry, R&B-inflected sound. The Vault 1 also reveals the fluidity that has always existed within C’batch’s songwriting and composition. Multiple alternate versions and reinterpretations appear throughout the project, demonstrating how ideas can shift meaning depending on arrangement, pacing or instrumentation.
Commenting on the relese, C’batch shares, “This project is about revisiting unfinished ideas and giving them the space to fully breathe. It’s not just archival—it’s renewal.”
