Chicago-based singer-songwriter Frank Gappa makes indie rock that balances guitar-driven momentum with emotional impact via songwriting that moves fast enough to feel energising while still leaving room for reflection. His music carries the context of someone who always knew there was something beyond the horizon. Raised in a small farm town in northeast Wisconsin, he found early inspiration through the radio, absorbing the energy of bands like Green Day and Dashboard Confessional before picking up a guitar at twelve years old with a simple ambitio to start a band and get to a big city.
That background became the thread running through the years that followed and time spent living and working in Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Brooklyn and now Chicago gradually shaped the artist he would become. Each move became part of the same story, a steady progression toward fully embracing his own identity as a solo artist. His official introduction arrived in 2019 with an eponymous debut EP and the following year, his single âClown Shoes,â created with Eric Sanderson, helped crystallise a textured indie rock approach that still informs his work now.
By 2024, Frank revealed another side through his full-length record Let Me Show You My Jean Jacket, a release that leaned into a more stripped-down and mature songwriting style, suggesting an artist increasingly comfortable with letting the songs speak plainly when needed. Now, with the upcoming EP Slow Dancers, he appears to be bringing those two contrasting styles together; the measured songwriting of recent work meets the energy and experimentation of earlier releases, creating the sense of an artist entering a new chapter rather than repeating old formulas.

The latest window into that sphere arrives with new single titled âCliff Hanger.â Following the momentum of âMove the Needle,â the track continues Frank’s exploration of nostalgia, personal change and the complicated nature of the people we admire. That theme gives âCliff Hangerâ a relatable emotional centre as most people eventually discover that the figures they once saw as unshakeable are often just as flawed, uncertain or human as anyone else.
The recording process also reflects Frank’s hands-on approach with him recording and producing the track at home, keeping the song personal and direct. Rob Allen contributes drums, while Chris Head adds lead guitar, offering a combination of homegrown intimacy and experienced finishing touches. Brought in by Frank’s emotive vocals above soft piano chords, the twang of airy guitar leads and laid back taps of drums forms a country-tinged indie rock scene that flows with tender melodies and heartfelt lyricism.
Blissful melodies glide above the mellow patter of percussion to cast a dreamy and highly affecting sound that’s truly impossible not to love. Live dates in Chicago and Milwaukee will support the release ahead of the Slow Dancers EP which is set to land on June 12th, giving audiences a chance to hear this new era in motion. With âCliff Hangerâ and the approaching Slow Dancers release, he continues to go from strength to strength as a talented singer-songwriter with a compelling musical vision and we can’t wait to see what he’s got in store next.
