Atlanta-based MatAre is an artist who’s used reinvention to shape the entire trajectory of his creative life. Before the atmospheric melancholy and reflective textures of the MatAre project arrived, Matt Rousseau had already earned a name for himself inside Orlando’s breakbeat scene under the alias Vibal, crafting adrenaline-fuelled club tracks designed for impact and late-night intensity. But over time, that high-energy electronic world gave way to something slower, more reflective and emotionally expansive.
With the arrival of MatAre in 2020, Matt stepped into an entirely different creative space; the flashing lights and dancefloor euphoria of his earlier work dissolved into cinematic guitar-driven soundscapes shaped by nostalgia and emotional context. While the penchant for atmosphere remained intact, the emotional perspective behind the music shifted dramatically, resulting in a complete creative reset.
Over the last five years, MatAre has developed into a project built around sonic subtlety and immersive mood, carrying echoes of rock, post punk and ambient textures while remaining highly personal in tone. The self-titled debut EP first introduced that direction, immediately separating MatAre from Matt’s earlier electronic work and that journey developed further in 2023 through the full-length record Patternicit and last year’s LP Extinction Burst. Returning this year with the four-track EP Brevity, MatAre now brings us his latest release with the brand new single titled “Dissolution,” a track that perhaps captures the project’s emotional philosophy more clearly than anything before it.

Revolving around a slowly evolving melodic guitar phrase, “Dissolution” thematically explores the gradual fading of something once stable. Whether interpreted as the unraveling of a relationship, a belief system or even a sense of self, the song deliberately avoids dramatic statement to instead focus on the quieter and often more unsettling reality of endings that disappear slowly over time until absence becomes clear. As Matt explains, “Dissolution isn’t about something breaking—it’s about something slowly losing its form until you realise it’s already gone.”
Jumping straight in with the bouncy pulse of bass guitar and steady punch of snare, the pluck of jangly guitar and shuffle of percussion sets up a lively scene of atmospheric post punk as Matt’s impassioned vocals enters. Stitching poignant lyrics into the absorbing musical fabric via moody melodic threads, he crafts an instantly memorable soundscape that rolls with uptempo rhythm, catchy hooks and engrossing arrangement. With airy synth textures gliding alongside his sparse vocal lines, the track develops with overlapping vocals to form a spacey finale which sees MatAre serve up a truly transportive listening experience.
The production itself mirrors the emotional subject matter perfectly, where elements drift and dissolve gradually, echoing the song’s central idea of form slowly disappearing before fully recognising what has already been lost. Guitars coated in chorus and ambient effects create a sense of atmospheric distance while the intricate rhythm section maintains a context sense of forward movement underneath. It’s another sensational outing from a singer-songwriter who continues to impress with each move and we can’t wait to see what he’s got in store for the rest of 2026 and beyond.
