Coming out of Edinburgh with a fully self-built vision, Satsuma is the solo project of multi-instrumentalist Cam Halkerston, an artist turning private experience into expansive alternative rock. Every part of the music comes directly from him, he plays all the instruments, handles the production, shapes the mixes and steers the entire creative process alone. When collaboration is often the default setting, Satsuma feels profoundly personal, brought to life by one person building a sonic world entirely from the ground up.
Nothing here appears outsourced or distanced and each guitar line, vocal take and production decision carries the imprint of its maker. It gives the music a closeness that suits the themes at its heart, where emotion, uncertainty and reflection all combine to form music that’s at once impactful and meaningful. The origins of Satsuma stretch back to when Cam taught himself to play instruments from a young age, gradually developing his skills through curiosity and repetition rather than formal pathways.
Early recordings were made on a phone, used as a way to play along, listen back and capture ideas and that instinctive experimentation slowly flourished into something more considered. Over time, those rough sketches became the framework of a project forged to be shared. Satsuma itself began after Cam left the Navy in 2022, a life shift that opened creative space while also bringing difficult questions of identity.
No longer part of the military, newly single and unsure of what came next, he entered a period marked by stark change. Alongside that came struggles with mental health linked both to military service and earlier childhood, as well as difficulties involving drugs and alcohol. Music became a coping mechanism before it became a formal release plan and songs were written during hard periods, recorded simply into a phone and shared with friends, early listeners that saw something worth pursuing and encouraged him to take it seriously.

That eventually led to Anodyne, the debut EP and official introduction to Satsuma which arrives as an alternative indie rock release shaped by guitar-driven songwriting, full-band energy and total creative autonomy. The EP draws heavily from 90s alternative rock, with key influence coming from Alice In Chains’ Jar Of Flies, particularly the way a band known for heavy riff-focused material and Yo La Tengo’s Painful, specifically its use of space and atmosphere, while Cam cites Radiohead’s The Bends for its pairing of overdriven guitar music with imperfect vocals.
Set up by the bright plucks of acoustic guitar on opening track “Ash And Dust,” a melancholic scene builds with soft vocals and laid back strums before the patter of drums and twang of lightly gritty guitar tones forms a smokey alternative rock outing. “Love My Lies” flows with lilting rhythmic sway as the blend of gentle acoustic guitar and hazy electric leads are met by Cam’s expressive vocals, progressing with the mellow shuffle of drums to serve up an engaging psych-tinged rock experience.
Title track Anodyne lands with the bounce of grunge-tinged aesthetic as punchy drums inject a steady energy before Cam’s moody voice enters above to deliver a brooding rock soundscape which surges with crunching chords. “Touch Of Your Breath” flows with elegant acoustic guitars and tender vocals, offering a concise slice of dreamy acoustic rock brimming with airy atmosphere and melodic charm.
“Swallowed” starts with the murky pulse of bass and eerie vocals as the strum of guitar and strike of drums swells around his emotive voice to lay down an engrossing listening experience from start to finish. Closing the EP with “Scorched Earth,” the low slung backing of guitar chords and rolling drums usher in processed vocals, rising with dark instrumental passages to cast an immersive and memorable finale to Satsuma’s stellar debut EP.
