Hailing from the suburbs of Chicago, tcr! belongs to a wave of artists who treat independence as method and follow its path towards a unique musical vision. He writes, plays, records and mixes everything himself, shaping each release from the inside out via a level of control gives the project a sense of intimacy. Nothing feels outsourced, overworked into anonymity or filtered through committee, it’s alternative indie music with a hypnotic magnetism.
His songs are driven by frank, meaningful writing, stitched with a cathartic as though each track exists because it needed to be said. But that emotional directness is balanced by strong knack for atmosphere, offering music that can feel personal without losing its wider appeal. That sound first arrived in full with the 2024 debut record Power Grid, introducing listeners to an artist already working with a clear internal language.
Since then, tcr! has followed up with a steady string of singles, EPs and further full-length albums and at the start of this year, he released the EP Dear Rabbits as another step in a rapidly expanding catalogue. From that project came “On Vancouver Island,” a track that sharply captures the strengths of his lo-fi indie rock style while bringing the emotional candour of his songwriting to the front.

“On Vancouver Island” presents a chaotic portrait of volatile romance, examining a toxic relationship with brutal honesty, confronting unstable dynamics directly and without decorative language. The track leans into a lo-fi framework that enhances rather than limits its impact; bluesy acoustic guitar forms the backbone, chugging forward with a stubborn pulse.
Rough-filtered vocals sit over a loping beat, giving the whole recording a sense of motion that marches with mellow energy, forming a moody soundscape that’s subtly angsty and catchy from start to finish. There’s also a melodic appeal running through the track that stops it collapsing under its own heaviness, with catchy repetitive rhythms and sing-song phrasing drawing listeners in, even as the lyricism grows more uncomfortable.
Wrapped in a smokey aesthetic that gives the stripped back arrangement an absorbing sound, the laid back groove carries the song throughout, “On Vancouver Island” sees tcr! serve up a punk-tinged scene that’s memorable, engaging and highly original all at once. As he continues to go from strength to strength as a fiercely independent artist with a compelling musical vision, tcr! once again presents a stellar display of his songwriting flair and performance talent. Releasing music at an incredible rate
