Originally cutting his teeth in Dublin’s music scene before relocating to London, Zak Coghlan arrives at this stage of his career carrying the experience of two distinct musical lives. Many listeners first encountered him as the frontman of rising Irish alternative rock outfit Sunburn, a role that helped stake his claim as a compelling songwriter and performer. Now working under his own name, Zak is stepping into a more personal creative space where every detail of the music reflects his own vision and artistic expression.
The transition from band leader to solo artist often comes with reinvention, but in Zak’s case it feels more like the inevitable next chapter in his story. The outlook remains familiar, with guitar-driven arrangements, compelling songwriting and a voice capable of balancing emotion with power. But there’s also a greater sense of focus running through his solo material, as though years of experience have sharpened his understanding of exactly what he wants to say and how he wants to say it.
His music takes cues from indie and alternative rock styles, drawing strength from atmosphere as much as melody. While themes of youth, heartbreak and personal growth sit at the centre of his songwriting, there’s a storytelling quality that feels tethered to his Irish background. In March, he made his entrance with the debut single “Composure” and the next month, he followed up with his sophomore track “Lead Balloon.” Now he keeps up the momentum with his brand new third single titled “Jump The Gun,” presnting perhaps his most significant statement thus far.

While the song itself is not entirely new, its latest incarnation feels like the result of years spent developing and reshaping an idea. Originally released during his time with Sunburn, the track has been given a complete overhaul as part of his solo catalogue, emerging louder, heavier and more impactful than ever before. “Jump The Gun” has lived several lives already, flowing through countless performances and gradually transforming into the version listeners hear today. Having been played live hundreds of times, the song has absorbed years of experience, becoming something informed as much by live performance as by composition.
Jumping straight in to a bouncy indie rock scene, the punch of drums drives an uptempo groove as layers of guitar tones usher in Zak’s bright vocals. Flickering between smooth melodic flourishes and impassioned hooks, his voice soars as the arrangement swells into an infectious chorus which surges with energy to deliver an enthralling and instantly catchy sound. Gliding with slick ebb and flow, the lively instrumentation provides an energising back drop while sing-along lines ring out above, resulting in a thrilling musical experience from start to finish.
Delivering meaningful lyrics that confront overthinking, emotional miscommunication and the frustrations that arise when relationships remain unresolved, Zak serves up an epic single that reframes the original version in his own exciting way. With “Jump The Gun,” Zak Coghlan offers both a reflection of his journey so far and an exciting indication of where this solo project may be heading next. Looking ahead, the momentum shows no signs of slowing, with plans already in place for his first London headline show later this summer, alongside a return to Dublin for a special hometown performance marking his first appearance there since relocating to London.
