For decades, Stephen H. Cumberbatch has pursued music with a sense of freedom and now, recording under the name C’batch, the White Plains-based composer, producer, author and multi-instrumentalist is writing a new chapter through curiosity and self-determination. Working across guitars, keyboards, synths and samplers, he’s continually developed alongside changing technology and musical landscapes while maintaining a personal creative identity of exciting sonic exploration.
That independence has been central to C’batch’s artistic story from the beginning when back in 1984, alongside Yvette Cumberbatch, he co-founded Stevette Music, Inc., establishing a platform that allowed him to release and develop music entirely in his own vision. He chose a self-directed route, shaping projects guided by his own compass while as an established ASCAP member with decades of experience behind him, C’batch has remained steadfast in that independent philosophy, allowing his catalogue to grow organically across multiple generations of music creation.
Across his discography, smooth jazz, contemporary R&B, pop, electronic production, ambient textures and cinematic influences all shimmer within his music. These elements function as interconnected parts of a wider creative language that prioritises mood, emotion and atmosphere above rigid stylistic borders and that versatility has become particularly evident throughout his recent output.
The ongoing Vault series has seen C’batch revisit material originally developed during the Unfinished Business era alongside C’batch & Herring. Not merely reissuing archival recordings, the series actively reconstructs and reimagines them through modern production techniques, creating a fascinating interplay between past inspiration and present-day sound. By breathing new life into earlier ideas, C’batch allows unfinished stories to continue progressing, transforming familiar concepts into something that feels at once nostaglic and cutting edge.

Nowhere is that balance more apparent than on The Vault 3, his latest instalment in the series which captures the full breadth of his creative ambitions. The album takes unreleased archival recordings and reshapes them into a collection of immersive late-night grooves, offering listeners a journey through romance, emotion and engaging musical experiences. House rhythms, techno influences and funk-infused grooves drive much of the album’s momentum, while modern R&B melodies, neo-soul vibes and alternative pop appeal provide warmth and accessibility throughout.
Split across two discs, the twenty-track outing starts with the shimmering instrumental textures of “Breaking My Heart” which jumps into a grooving dance pop scene cut with sultry R&B vocal leads to serve up a sound that’s energising and soulful in equal measure. “Found What’s Right for Me” flows with airy vocalisations and intricate instrumental flickers before pulsing tones inject a steady forward motion to kick start a bouncy jam brimming with crisp beats, alluring vocal leads and euphoric dancefloor aesthetic. Tracks like “Too Hot to Handle” bring infectious disco vibes where funky guitars, stabby rhythms and catchy vocal hooks collide in a spectacular pop-focused musical experience.
“On to You” rolls with downtempo beats and smokey vocals as dreamy instrumental elements cast a mesmeric soundscape to craft a stunning duet. “Hit Me with Your Love” lands with punching bass shots, shuffling drums and impassioned vocals to channel a stellar 80s pop sound that’s sure to leave a lasting impression with listeners while “Turn It up-2” leans into an uplifting scene of bright instrumental textures and memorable vocal leads to lay down a magical musical moment guaranteed to put a smile on the face of anyone who hears it.
The album’s lead single “Hold on Now” starts with powerful vocal lines as the sweeping instrumentation and rising percussion builds up. Jittery sax pips and stomping drums combine to deliver a driving dance energy packed full of exhilarating rhythms and dazzling vocal leads, resulting in an engrossing sound from start to finish. Closing the expansive new release with “Midnight Love Serenade (Honeyed Girl),” the laid back taps of percussion and elegant flutter of guitar forms a smooth slice of mellow instrumental music to conclude the album with an utterly charming soundscape.
Commenting on the new release, C’batch shares, “The Vault 3 connects the raw adrenaline of electronic music with the deep groove of soul. It is built for late nights and global dance culture.”
