From the city of Hagen in Germany, Frank Renfordt has spent the last several years building an unlikely bridge to the sounds and traditions of Americana and country music. Through The Cumberland River Project, he’s created a space where personal reflection, transatlantic inspiration and a love of storytelling all meet, resulting in music that feels tethered to American traditions while viewed through a European lens. The journey towards The Cumberland River Project began long before the project itself existed.
As a child, Frank received a guitar from his parents, an early gift that sparked a lifelong relationship with music. By his teenage years, he’d shifted to bass guitar and became part of the rock band RING, a group that remains an important part of his musical life. But like many creative pursuits, music gradually moved into the background as other responsibilities took precedence and it would take decades before songwriting returned to the centre of his life.
In his mid-fifties, a new creative energy arrived, fuelled largely by visits to the United States; time spent in Nashville left a particularly strong impression, introducing him to the storytelling stylings of Americana and country music. Those experiences reignited a passion that had been dormant for years and ultimately led to the creation of The Cumberland River Project.
The endeavour first surfaced publicly in 2020 with the release of “Back On The Road,” marking the beginning of a new chapter for Frank as a songwriter. Recognition soon followed when his work earned a finalist position in the UK Songwriting Contest and received an Outstanding Achievement in Songwriting award from the Great American Song Contest. By 2024, Frank expanded the scope of the project with the release of the EP Vain Regrets, a release which represented an important personal milestone as he stepped into the role of lead vocalist for the first time.

Now Frank returns with “When The Streetlights Came On,” a new single that draws its strength from a feeling shared across generations and continents. Co-written with American songwriter Mick Logsdon, whom Frank met during a songwriting retreat in England, the song arose from conversations about childhood memories and the surprising similarities between their experiences growing up. Although Mick was raised in Nebraska and Frank in Germany, both discovered that many of their early memories felt incredible familiar and at the heart of those recollections was a simple rule that shaped countless childhood evenings: when the streetlights came on, it was time to go home.
Jumping straight into a shimmering musical scene with the intricate taps of cymbal and plucks of guitar as smooth sax leads ring out above, warm vocal leads float in to spin alluring melodic leads carrying storytelling lyrics above the delicate arrangement. Dashed with twanging lead guitar lines, the song glides into a glowing chorus where dazzling melodic hooks and pulsing groove combine to cast a stunning country pop sound brimming with nostalgia and delightful atmosphere.
Full of superb instrumental flourishes and led by soulful vocal performance, “When The Streetlights Came On” sees two songwriters find a shared memory between their contrasting upbringings. With “When The Streetlights Came On,” The Cumberland River Project delivers a heartfelt reflection on childhood, memory and gratitude. It’s a song built on a simple idea that speaks to something widely relatable, capturing the value of those moments that stay with us long after the lights come on and it is finally time to head home.
