Outside of the limelight, Czech guitarist and composer Kamila Csenge has already walked an extraordinary musical path. Arriving with years of study, international performance experience and a mission to explore modern instrumental jazz, she builds a sound that values atmosphere just as highly as virtuoso performance. Drawing inspiration from figures including Pat Metheny, Billy Childs and Chick Corea, her compositions balance intricate harmonies, unusual time signatures and cinematic emotion, creating music that constantly shifts between intimacy and arresting musical landscapes.
Her development has been informed by both discipline and curiosity and after graduating from high school in Nový Jičín, Kamila continued her education at Prague’s Jaroslav Ježek Conservatory before earning a scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston, where she studied Guitar Performance. Graduating summa cum laude in 2017, she achieved Dean’s List recognition every semester and received the John LaPorta Award for outstanding achievement in Guitar Performance, hinting at an artistic career built upon both academic excellence and creative exploration.
Performance has remained a central pillar of that voyage and whether appearing in duos, trios or full band settings, Kamila has brought her music to audiences across New York, Boston, Berlin and the Czech Republic, performing at venues including Williamsburg Music Center, Shrine, ShapeShifter Lab, Hybernia Theatre, Ryles Jazz Club, the New England Guitar Festival and Prague Congress Center. Her work has also extended to television appearances in Prague and Bohemian TV, alongside performances aboard the TUI Cruises vessel Mein Schiff 2, revealing an artist comfortable adapting her music to a wide variety of settings.
Now, after introducing listeners to her fiercely original musical world through a trio of well-received singles earlier this year, Kamila Csenge presents her debut album, Behind the Universe. Featuring Kamila on guitar alongside Yamirah Gercke on guitar, Kateřina Vacková on double bass and bass guitar, and Ivo Hermanovský on drums, the record explores the spaces beyond what can be seen or easily understood. Across seven compositions, the album considers fear, transformation, hope and determination, taking listeners into a journey where the limits of time, space and possibility begin to dissolve.

Opening piece “The Void” instantly sets the album’s philosophical direction as a jazz fusion ballad that examines a contemplative state existing beyond simple ideas of positivity and negativity. The composition plays out across two distinct sections, beginning in quiet reflection before gradually shifting towards major tonality, introducing light, renewal and creation. From breezy guitar flickers and calmly rustling drums, the musicians lock into a lilting sway with that delicate atmosphere giving way to dancing guitar lines and playful rhythmic shifts.
“Against the Wall” captures the determination required to bring about meaningful change, wrapped up in a grooving scene where warm basslines and shuffling drums underpin the delicate flutter of intricate guitar leads, taking on energy as distorted tones glide above pattering percussion and bouncy backing. Questions surrounding creativity itself also arise through “Music Forever” where Kamila reflects on the changing way music is experienced, acknowledging the growing tension between artistic expression and commercial expectation, captured in a subtly moody soundscape that ultimately arrives at a hopeful conclusion.
Imagination takes another turn on “Guardians of the Garden,” transporting listeners into a symbolic world removed from noise and disorder and within this mysterious landscape, the garden becomes a metaphor for beauty, hope and life itself, while unseen guardians quietly preserve what remains fragile. “The Metamorphosis” forms a sonic sphere where fear no longer dictates direction, with the piece embracing irreversible growth via a track that glides between hypnotic grooves to bright flourishes, offering an incredible display of Kamila’s compositional talent and the band’s instrumental interplay.
“This World” offers perhaps the album’s most compassionate statement, reflecting on the unseen burdens people carry while emphasising the importance of empathy and mutual support. Delicate guitar notes cast a laid back scene while restrained instrumentation and soft percussive taps combine to deliver an elegant musical moment. Closing composition “The Point of No Return” provides a fitting conclusion to the journey that flows around the idea that certain decisions permanently reshape who we become, where energising drums and noodling guitar leads combine to present a superb finale to Kamila Csenge’s magnificent debut album.
