Coming out of Brooklyn’s experimental underground music sphere, ko.valainen is a new artist who prefers to let sound speak louder than identity. Shrouded in mystery and operating within the overlap of technology, noise and emotion, the enigmatic project has been bringing something new to the world of experimental music. Eschewing conventional songwriting structures or easily defined context, ko.valainen builds immersive sonic environments where texture, tension and atmosphere become the primary language.
That vision first began to take shape in May of last year with the release of the debut single, “1,” an opening statement that hinted at a wider conceptual framework that would continue to develop through a series of numbered releases. With each new piece, ko.valainen expanded an increasingly intricate musical universe, drawing listeners deeper into a world shaped by modular synthesis, manipulated guitars and basses, drone textures and analogue degradation.
Now that journey reaches its most ambitious chapter yet with the arrival of life, a debut full-length album that transforms the experience of being human into something translated through machine logic. Ultimately, life is a conceptual work built around an unusual and compelling idea which divides the arc of a human life into eight distinct states and represents them through coded chess movements. Birth, childhood, desire, isolation, emotional fragmentation, decay and death become part of a larger system, filtered through a language more commonly associated with calculation and strategy than feeling.
In doing so, ko.valainen explores the space where human emotion collides with mechanical structure and the album’s construction mirrors that concept. Created using modular synthesis, manipulated guitar and bass signals, drone-based sound design, analogue tones and custom-built electronics designed through Lefa Pedals, life feels like a living system. Sounds rise, mutate and dissolve without warning while melodies are often implied rather than stated outright and rhythms appear and disappear beneath shifting layers of sonic debris.

Instead of following traditional compositional paths, ko.valainen embraces instability as a creative tool; random modulation, feedback interaction, shifting textures and controlled disarray run throughout the record. It’s a formula that crafts music that feels constantly in motion, as though each piece is discovering itself in real time. Set up by opening track “A1,” the album gradually drifts into focus with stretched textures and chiming tones, forming an absorbing soundscape which casts a soporific listening experience from start to finish.
“B1” follows with the swirl of bright tones and wash of atmosphere as plucks, twinkles and revered textured glide in an enveloping arrangement, seemingly chosen without method, to deliver a transportive slice of spacious ambient instrumental music. “C1” shifts with the energy, bringing stacks of fuzzy textures and unnerving aesthetic, leaning into feedback and static to present a cacophony of engrossing noise.
With “D1,” ko.valainen brings the record back into a mesmeric place where airy synth tones float through a dreamy scene, coalescing into a hypnotic musical moment. “E1” pairs a pulsing rhythmic anchor with the delicate flutter of sweeping instrumental elements before taking flight with consuming textures, taking listeners on an engrossing musical voyage before “F1” stutters into view with the harsh buzz of mechanical bleeps and rattling shots.
“G1” offers an ominous soundscape of sparse sonic swells and wailing tones, descending into a gripping sound of layers machine noises and intense aesthetic. Closing the record with “H1,” droning tolls and soft beeps pepper an arrangement of immersive textures, bringing the album to a subtly unsettling finale. With life, ko.valainen delivers a pioneering debut album that asks questions rather than providing answers, examining the relationship between emotion and technology through sound. In translating the stages of human existence into machine language, ko.valainen has created a work that feels somehow deeply personal and intriguingly abstract, offering a listening experience unlike any other
