Raised between cultures, with an American father and a Costa Rican mother, Kevin Farge’s music is intrinsically linked to the life he’s built around it. The songwriter has spent the last six years living in his mother’s village in Costa Rica, travelling by bicycle, surfing regularly and recording from a home studio shaped by its surroundings. That connection to place runs through his work, informing not only the sounds he creates but the way his songs move through time, with his music feeling based in real experience, carrying traces of ocean air, tropical landscapes and the quiet rhythms of everyday life.
Now, the sense of immersion reaches its fullest expression on Country Love Song, an expansive twenty seven-track album that plays out like a world unto itself. Recorded in a cabin surrounded by mango trees overlooking a surf break, the project brings together folk, Texas slowcore, orchestral indie pop, Brazilian jazz and alternative country into something remarkably fluid. At the centre of the album is his voice; warm, intimate and unguarded, it carries stories of memory, belonging and movement with a delicate confidence.
There’s nothing rushed about Country Love Song, it invites listeners into its environment, rewarding patience with emotional understanding, subtle humour and moments of unexpected beauty. Throughout the record, Kevin appears both settled and restless, focused and wandering. He occupies the role of observer and participant simultaneously, documenting the world around him while remaining fully immersed within it, a tension that gives the project its emotional context, transforming it into a reflection on contentment.
The album’s genre-blend becomes one of its greatest strengths, with slow-burning moments sitting alongside brighter, more rhythmic excursions, creating a listening experience that constantly shifts throughout. Opening track “Good Girls” combines country storytelling with Latin rhythms and indie rock momentum, while “Never Gonna Back Down” layers strings, breakbeats and detuned acoustic guitar into a determination anthem built around persistence.

Collaboration plays a significant role throughout the project and these partnerships feel stitched into the fabric of the album itself. Little Wings joins Kevin on “Memphis,” bringing warmth and tenderness to an alternative country setting, while Kyle Field contributes to “A Little More Fun,” a playful country blues track that shimmers with the chemistry between the two musicians. Their partnership continues on “Two Bags of Rice,” where rhythmic energy and creative freedom collide in a track that feels constantly in motion.
“Frijoles” introduces breezy Spanish bossa influences through a collaboration with composer and longtime Devendra Banhart collaborator Gregory Rogove. Together, the songs highlight Kevin’s ability to move between musical traditions without forcing connections. Yet some of the album’s most memorable moments arrive when it slows down. “Mariel Pt. 2” offers a meditative reflection on impermanence and presence, while “Sing for Me, Darling” captures both the beauty and unpredictability of the tropical wilderness.
Instrumental pieces further expand the album’s scope with tracks such as “Pastoral” drawing connections between Portuguese guitar traditions and Costa Rican marimba influences, reinforcing Kevin’s place within the contemporary American Primitive guitar movement while broadening its geographical and cultural horizons. Elsewhere, Farge demonstrates an instinctive talent for blending styles into something uniquely his own, with closing track “Coastal Fog” embracing the patient pull of slowcore and mellow pop appeal.
Throughout Country Love Song, there is a palpable sense of worlds meeting, reflecting a life lived between cultures, landscapes and traditions to present a record that feels at once intimate and far-reaching, shaped equally by personal experience and wider musical exploration. Country Love Song ultimately asks listeners to slow down, pay attention and spend time within its carefully constructed environment. In return, Kevin Farge offers a collection of songs rich with warmth, humanity and perspective, proving that sometimes the most expansive journeys begin by standing still long enough to truly listen.
