Joseph Turner & The Dudes of Hazard arrives with a backstory that feels stitched throughout the music itself. Hailing from the Dutch delta, the project centres on Joseph Turner, a songwriter whose years spent playing in rock bands have gradually flourished into something more personal and self-directed which draws on observation, memory and emotional honesty. Alongside a rotating cast of friends and collaborators known as The Dudes of Hazard, he’s created a musical world where indie, alternative and dark Americana influences blend with acoustic songwriting, cinematic atmosphere and a constant sense of movement.
That balance between intimacy and impact has become a vital characteristic of the project, with Joseph often recording much of the material himself, allowing songs to retain a natural quality while still leaving room for wider sonic textures. Acoustic guitars sit alongside pop melodies and country-inflected storytelling, creating music that feels both approachable and emotionally compelling. The Dudes of Hazard are not so much a fixed band but a revolving collection of contributors who appear when needed, adding personality and new elements to recordings and live performances alike.
In March, the project first introduced itself through the debut single “A New Moon,” a release that progressed patiently and trusted listeners to immerse themselves in its atmosphere. Follow-up single “Travelin’ Heart” expanded that sound, continuing to place songwriting at the centre while stretching out the musical landscape surrounding it, with both releases establishing a sound full of warmth, reflection and the sense of endless roads reaching toward an uncertain horizon. Now, however, Joseph Turner & The Dudes of Hazard reveal a markedly different side of their artistic identity with the release of “The Shadow Remains.”

This latest offering ventures into far darker emotional areas via a song written while reflecting on a prolonged period shaped by anxiety and ultimately the fear of fear itself, exploring an experience that lasted years rather than being tied to any single event. “The Shadow Remains” immerses itself in the feeling of living alongside that ever-present, ominous feeling, “I used to try and fight the anxiety. This time I turned it into something I could actually sit inside and embrace,” Joseph shares about the song. The track mirrors that context with a hypnotic and persistent rhythm, creating a sense of forward motion that never quite offers release.
The scratch of acoustic guitar rhythms sets up a steady patter as the arrangement forms with moody vocalisations and layered instrumentation driven by the marching punch of kicks. Mantra-like vocals and fluttering guitar leads craft an atmospheric alternative folk scene while the energy swells with drifting instrumental elements and lively strums cast a spellbinding soundscape of engaging ebb and flow. Every element feels intentionally locked into place, highlighting a tension that never fully resolves, instead remaining suspended to create a controlled feeling of discomfort that echoes the experience of living in a prolonged state of anxiety.
Although it confronts fear head-on, it’s composed from a position of survival rather than surrender while looking back at difficult years from a distance that allows understanding to replace panic. Once again delivering a unique and thoroughly appealing musical experience, “The Shadow Remains” sees Joseph Turner & The Dudes of Hazard expand the sphere their sound and reveal new emotional ideas in the process. Through repetition, atmosphere and restrained intensity, Joseph Turner transforms personal strife into a relatable slice of worthwhile artistic expression while framing the idea that while certain shadows may remain, surviving them can become its own form of strength.
