pdqb is an artist shrouded in a sense of mystery and behind the cryptic abbreviation lies a project that’s become as much about mythology as it is about music. Attempts to identify the figure behind the alias have only heightened the intrigue and while a certain Sascha Dornhöfer has occasionally been linked to the project, any connection has been firmly denied, with explanations becoming increasingly surreal. Depending on which story you choose to believe, pdqb is anything from an ordinary musician to an alien parasite capable of possessing human bodies, creatively voyaging through a multiverse unconstrained by time and space.
Whether fact, fiction or part of an elaborate artistic tale, the ambiguity has become intrinsically linked to the music itself. Over the past few years, pdqb has built an extensive catalogue at an astonishing pace, releasing a steady string of well-received releases that have established a distinctive identity within the underground electronic music sphere. Eschewing familiar structures or predictable formulas, each release expands an ever-shifting sonic world driven by experimentation and imagination.
That vision now reaches a new scale with DER TRANSIENTE ZEUGE, a 17-track double vinyl release arriving via the Synaptic Cliffs imprint. Featuring thirteen original productions alongside four remixes, the project continues pdqb’s exploration of ‘Electro-Cognition,’ a fusion of futuristic electro, machine funk and intricate rhythmic design that feels equally suited to the dancefloor and to speculative science fiction.
DER TRANSIENTE ZEUGE behaves like an intercepted transmission where every track appears to exist within its own shifting reality while remaining tethered to a wider conceptual framework. Mechanical grooves form alongside fractured rhythms, synthetic basslines and glitch-heavy melodic fragments, creating music that constantly changes direction while retaining momentum. Some moments lock into tightly constructed electro rhythms built for movement, while others dissolve into abstract sonic environments that resemble corrupted broadcasts or unfinished memories. The transitions arrive without warning, allowing tracks to mutate from club-focused energy into something more unsettling within moments.

That unpredictability is central to the album’s identity, playing out like an interconnected system where metallic percussion, distorted synthesisers and fractured breakbeats compete for space. Revolving around the idea of a Transient Witness, the album imagines a synthetic observer documenting events that never quite occurred. Forgotten futures, erased possibilities and unrealised decisions become the source material for its sound design, with basslines rising from alternate realities and melodies appearing only briefly before disappearing into static.
“Suoivex hddnflg” sets up the release with the patter of percussion, pulsing bass shots and jittery synth pips, forming an engaging jam that rolls with danceable energy and a contrast between upbeat tone and a subtly moody aesthetic. Warbling vocal samples usher in “SpctrlGcntn” which flows into a mesmeric groove where buzzy synth textures glide above the bounce of the drums and flashes of spacey vocalisations combine to deliver a transportive listening experience.
Egyptian Lover provides the first remix, transforming the opening track into a more brooding scene with wubbing low-end energy and darker synth elements. Tracks like “Zum Skan_die_ren!” offer gripping rhythmic energy with punching beats and smokey atmosphere, serving up an enthralling soundscape of thumping percussion and a sweeping arrangement packed full of twists and turns. “Cuttching” lands with stabby rhythmic energy as flickering synth leads dance above and woozy vocalisations drift to cast an invigorating jam.
“Inter Ruptus” delivers an epic sonic voyage of rolling rhythms and robotic vocal elements before the Umwelt remix reframes the track with intense percussive energy and ominous atmosphere. The hypnotic march of “Dynaquenz” forms the final original track on the album, offering a steady groove dashed with stuttering vocal sample shots and immersive sound design, offering a more downtempo moment on the LP. With DER TRANSIENTE ZEUGE, pdqb continues to construct one of underground electronic music’s most enigmatic universes and whether interpreted as a futuristic electro record, an elaborate science fiction story or something existing somewhere between the two, it’s a release designed to challenge perceptions of where electronic music can go next.
