Every Other Weekend is a musical project that formed after a period of silence, carrying the echoes of everything that happened in the years before. The latest endeavour from singer-songwriter Chris Bull represents a return to songwriting after loss, change and reflection, marking a highly personal new chapter for the former City Reign frontman.
Music was never simply a creative outlet for Chris, it was always closely tied to family, memory and identity, particularly through the influence of his father, who was also his musical mentor. When his father passed away in 2015, the loss had a profound effect on his relationship with songwriting and the following year brought another major change with the end of City Reign, the Manchester indie outfit that had long been his creative home. Together, those events left him disconnected from the thing that had once guided so much of his life.
The years that followed became a period of adjustment and while music remained present in memory, the act of creating it felt difficult. Picking up a guitar carried emotional pain and the inspiration that had previously arrived so naturally seemed increasingly distant. Life continued moving forward, including his marriage in the years after those losses, yet songwriting remained largely absent. Everything began to change however when Chris returned to London and while away from the environment that had defined much of his time in Manchester, space opened up for something new to emerge.
By 2018, fragments of melody started appearing again, captured on late-night voice notes as small ideas that gradually accumulated. The songs he penned would eventually form Every Other Weekend’s upcoming debut album, All Present and Inept. Longtime creative ally Adam Millest recorded all of the drums during a single concentrated weekend, while former collaborator Mike Grice contributed lead guitar, bass and synths. Additional elements came through backing vocals and violin from Lexytron, whose unique tone adds warmth throughout the record.

The latest window into the record comes with “Resolution,” the third single which lands as a song closely tied to family and memory. After returning to London, Chris spent time living with his mother while rebuilding his life and during that period, he found himself repeatedly drawn to the old piano his father had first taught him to play. It was there that the central melody emerged, arriving naturally and immediately connecting with him. The song was recorded and self-produced in his mother’s garage using much of his father’s old recording equipment, further highlighting its emotional significance, while Mike Grice’s lead guitar performance provides a beautiful sense of movement and momentum throughout.
Chris deliberately kept the words sparse, focusing less on storytelling and more on atmosphere and feeling, allowing listeners to step inside the song and let their own emotional response form organically. Brought in by the bright piano plinks carrying the memorable lead melody, the arrangement swells with intricate lead guitar notes and splashy drums before simmering down to make space for Chris’ emotive vocal leads. With heartfelt lyrics carried by tender melodies, his voice glides above the steady patter of drums before the surge of instrumentation adds dashes of invigorating energy, crafting a stunning pop rock experience that’s moving, catchy and thoroughly original from start to finish.
Putting his songwriting flair and performance talent on full display, “Resolution” sees Every Other Weekend continue to shine with another utterly charming musical moment. With Every Other Weekend, Chris Bull has created something born from reconstruction and enduring musical vision and with All Present and Inept on the horizon, he’s set to capture the sound of an artist reconnecting with creativity, memory and purpose while allowing the songs to speak with honesty and grace.
