Originally hailing from southern Wyoming and now based in Texas, Sam Platts is a singer-songwriter influenced by place, tradition and real life experience. Growing up on his grandfather’s ranch, music became a constant companion, with country songs providing the soundtrack to long drives across the western landscape. Encouraged by his father Scott, a luthier and accomplished guitarist, Sam developed a love for the instrument that would ultimately lead him onto stages across the USA and beyond.
Today, he continues to channel those early experiences into music that honours the enduring spirit of the American West while remaining highly personal. In his early twenties he joined a touring country act, an experience that would lead to a career spent performing in front of audiences far beyond the ranches where his passion first began. Later, his role as lead guitarist for Wylie and the Wild West took him across the country and around the world, further enhancing a musical output already based in timeless country storytelling.
Those years on the road have become an essential part of his songwriting, drawing inspiration from western landscapes, Texas dance halls and the quiet reflections that come from life spent constantly moving between places. His music balances traditional country with Americana influences, combining inviting arrangements with stories that feel relatable and truly sincere.
That artistic approach has steadily revealed itself through recent singles including “Hopeless,” “Missing Wyoming,” “High Country” and “Right Where I Belong.” Together, they’ve built up a catalogue centred on movement, memory and identity, with pedal steel-inflected arrangements supporting songs that carry emotional impact without unnecessary embellishment. Across every release, Sam shows a clear understanding of what makes classic country music endure, offering compelling storytelling delivered with restraint and conviction.

Now that vision reaches its fullest expression on his self-released album titled Right Where I Belong, a ten-track outing that serves as his most complete artistic statement to date. Blending traditional country, Americana, western influences and folk storytelling, the record explores ideas of home, family, change and belonging through songs intrinsically linked to the landscapes that have shaped his life. Recorded at Cherry Ridge Studio, the album was produced by legendary Texas producer and steel guitarist Tommy Detamore and features an accomplished group of musicians including pedal steel player Dave Biller, drummer Brian Dunn, upright bassist Rick Ramirez, background vocalist Justin Trevino and fiddler Lilly Platts, Sam’s wife, who’s performed alongside him for the past decade.
Opened by the title track “Right Way I Belong,” a joyous country scene takes shape with the twang of plucked notes, bright violin tones and the groove of tapped percussion and walking bass lines. Sam’s deep voice glides in to spin storytelling lyricism via charming melodies above, casting a classic country jam brimming with memorable melodies and exquisite musicianship. “Hopeless” follows with a bouncy flutter of pulsing rhythms and the intricate interplay between Lilly’s violin and lead guitar licks. Rolling with compelling vocal leads and airy pedal steel textures, it’s a superb musical moment that’s catchy and truly impossible not to love.
“I Came into Town a Stranger” crafts a laid back sound of mellow rhythmic march and thoughtful lyrics, peppered with playful piano flickers to deliver a stellar showcase of Sam’s songwriting talent and performance flair. Other highlights on the record include songs like “Missing Wyoming” which presents an emotive song about longing for his home state, wrapped up in a breezy country setting full of delightful melodic leads and stunning instrumentation.
Previously released single “High Country” brings the rustle of brushed percussion and delicate instrumental elements while Sam’s alluring vocals offer transportive lyrical writing while “Shackles and Chains” flows with lilting rhythmic sway to frame his sound in a downtempo setting. Closing the album with “Buster” the jaunty blend of violin, pedal steel and piano is propelled by shuffling drums and smooth vocals to offer an upbeat finale to the magnificent debut album from Sam Platts.
