Coming out of Szczecin in Poland, Tár are a band who take existing styles of rock music and twist them into something entirely their own. Featuring th talents of vocalist Tomasz Jackowski, guitarist Krzysztof Boboryko, bassist Robert Lachendro and drummer Daniel Nowakowski, their shared sonic vision forms in the space where alternative rock and metal collide with desert rock, stoner doom, shoegaze and grunge. It’s a sound they describe as “nostalgic-gaze,” which channels the aesthetic of the 90s guitar underground while wrapping it in a modern atmosphere.
That unique sound first landed in autumn 2024 when they first played live and unveiled their studio sound with their debut EP Chasing Shadows… Losing Ground, a release that introduced listeners to the band’s expansive and emotionally charged style. After a brief period away from releasing new material, Tár returned earlier this year with a pair of singles before revealing their latest outing titled Dancing on the Event Horizon. Not merely a follow-up release, the new EP marks what the band describe as a creative rebirth and the opening of an exciting new chapter that sees them build on their momentum while exploring new musical areas.
The title alone carries a sense of tension; Dancing on the Event Horizon evokes the image of standing at a threshold, caught between opposing possibilities. It’s the point where certainty disappears and instinct takes over, a concept that becomes the emotional backbone of the record which sees the band thematically transforming uncertainty into momentum and reflection into motion. Across its four tracks, the EP explores a trio of recurring themes, with loss, defiance and nostalgia all rippling throughout the release.
Yet this is far removed from a sentimental longing for simpler times, nostalgia is treated as something more complex, a force capable of carrying both comfort and impact. That perspective sits at the core of the band’s self-styled “nostalgic-gaze” approach, where memories arrive wrapped in distortion, atmosphere and emotional ambiguity. The EP continues to develop the balance that’s become central to Tár’s appeal where heavy stoner doom grooves provide the propulsion and layers of shimmering shoegaze textures stretch the music into more expansive spheres.

The EP kicks off with lead single “A Course for Home,” a track that continues a journey already familiar within the band’s creative universe, which sets up the release with the smokey plucks of fuzzy guitar notes, tapped percussive shots and hazy vocal samples. Jumping into a grooving alternative rock scene, punching drums, crunching instrumentation and commanding vocals combine to form a gripping soundscape packed full of moody atmosphere, anthemic energy and slick lead guitar work which injects bluesy vibes.
“Black Lights” offers another perspective on the group’s shifting sound, combining theatrical energy with emotional fragility, pairing a sense of heartbreak with the kind of guitar-driven force that remains central to Tár’s musical output. With the twang of bright guitars, steady patter of drums and melodic vocal leads, the track presents a stellar balance between driving rock momentum and mesmeric melodic bliss, surging into an epic sound of splashing drums, stacked vocal layers and gritty guitar tones.
With “Neon Blood,” the lively strike of drums builds to usher in jittery guitar riffs and expressive vocal leads, rolling into an engrossing scene of crashing percussion and wholly absorbing instrumentation capped by belted vocal performance. Cut with memorable melodic leads and instilled with brooding tone, it’s a thrilling listening experience that puts the band’s incredible songwriting flair and performance panache on full display.
Closing the EP with “Anatomy of Letting Go,” the lightly distorted rhythms of guitar chords and pulse of bass are carried by laid back drums as Tomasz’s smooth vocals glide in to spin delicate melodies above, casting an immersive scene that rises into an arresting chorus to deliver a superb finale to the band’s sophomore EP. With this latest release, Tár continue to go from strength to strength as an exciting modern rock band with an original and highly compelling musical offering.
