Through their musical output, Midnight Mystery Club creates entire states of mind and since arriving back in 2015, the California-born duo has been making an impact with a space where nostalgia, electronic music and cinematic atmosphere drift together, producing a sound in the overlap between memory and imagination. Built around the creative partnership of producer, singer and multi-instrumentalist David Paul Newell alongside drummer Llavar Mindley, the project has become synonymous with late-night escapism, transforming influences from the past into something thoroughly exciting.
The origins of Midnight Mystery Club stretch across continents and musical traditions; David Paul Newell’s path first took him to Nashville, where he worked as an audio engineer alongside Taylor Swift before moving into songwriting collaborations with figures including The Shapeshifters and Michael Gray. That period helped form his own production style while eventually leading him back to California’s Central Coast, where the earliest ideas behind Midnight Mystery Club began to take shape.
The missing piece arrived through a chance meeting with drummer Llavar Mindley who, having toured with soul icon William Bell and performed as part of the Grammy Experience, brought an organic rhythmic energy seldom seen within electronic music. His live percussion gives Midnight Mystery Club’s productions a human aesthetic, propelling the shimmering synths and slick production via performances that breathe naturally.

Together, the duo presents their project as a shared exploration of surrealism during the twilight hours while embracing what they call “intentional ear candy,” crafting music designed for long night drives, fading sunsets and moments where reality feels just slightly abstract. Taking cues from artists including Sade, Fleetwood Mac and Peter Gabriel, their songs create a sphere where analogue warmth collides with modern electronic vibes.
That vision has struck a chord on an increasingly global scale and by operating entirely through their own independent label, Playing Hooky Music, Midnight Mystery Club has built an international audience without corporate or investor backing. More than 15 million cumulative streams reflect an incredible momentum, further amplified by significant year-on-year growth. Their catalogue has achieved 91 Top 100 placements across iTunes and Apple Music worldwide, reaching number one positions in Brazil, Argentina and Tunisia while securing Top 10 chart rankings across more than fifteen additional countries including France, Portugal, Spain, Singapore, Estonia and Colombia.

Beyond streaming platforms, their music has also featured within Café Mambo Ibiza Sunsets and Café del Mar XXVI while providing soundtracks for international campaigns by Zara, Tommy Hilfiger, Soho House and Gap. Their production work also earned recognition at the 2018 Independent Music Awards, where they were named Electronic/Dance Producers of the Year. Their forthcoming album Telescope marks their most ambitious creative statement thus far, built around the idea that distance often brings understanding after love has ended. Across five interconnected singles, the project examines perspective through both emotional experience and cosmic imagery, using the vastness of space as a lens through which everyday human feelings become newly visible.
The latest chapter arrives with “Heavenly,” the fourth single taken from Telescope and a track which introduces another subtle shift in the duo’s already fluid sound, embracing a deep house energy built around driving basslines, sparse yet richly layered arrangements and meditative, chant-like vocals. Synth textures drift in and out almost imperceptibly, appearing and disappearing throughout the composition as though moving through different states of consciousness.

The band describes the atmosphere surrounding “Heavenly” through the Latin word ‘Somnium,’ a dream or visionary state where the boundaries separating time, space and physical reality begin to dissolve. It’s an idea reflected directly within the music itself, which gradually immerses listeners inside a quiet nocturnal landscape where stillness allows deeper emotional reflection to surface.
Blending elements of deep house and synth pop, “Heavenly” rolls with the bounce of pattering percussion as pulsing synth tones swirl around breezy vocal elements, casting an engrossing electronic pop outing that’s invigorating and dreamy in equal measure. Dashed with memorable melodic leads and flowing with danceable groove wrapped in a spacey atmosphere, “Heavenly” sees Midnight Mystery Club serve up a magical musical moment while further building the excitement for the release of Telescope.
Each single is accompanied by artwork featuring imagery captured by the original Hubble Space Telescope, highlighting the album’s central concept that physical distance often sharpens emotional understanding. It’s an elegant visual extension of the music itself, connecting personal reflection with the immense scale of the universe. With Telescope approaching release, Midnight Mystery Club continues to go from strength to strength with each move and we can’t wait to see what the full album has in store. By combining sophisticated electronic production, human performance and cinematic storytelling, the duo has created a musical world that feels timeless, transporting listeners into the beautifully uncertain space between a fading memory and a lucid dream.
