Alexander Paul Burton approaches composition as a shifting conversation between tradition, technology and the human presence of the performer. Performing under the name Tremolo A Tiempo, the Swiss, Canadian and British pianist has developed a musical language that brings together neo-Baroque counterpoint, Romantic phrasing and electronic synthesis to create works that sit between the classical world and contemporary experimentation. Now based in Canada, his music continues to dissolve boundaries, creating hybrid piano and violin textures that move naturally through lo-fi, neoclassical and EDM-inspired spaces.
His artistic vision has been informed by an unusually wide array of influences; experiences connected to Cornwall, Japan and Somerset have helped forge a compositional style built around microtonality, stochastic tempo variation and minimalist polyrhythms, while asymmetric phrasing, non-linear harmonic cycles and spectral layering have become part of his work. Through that framework, Alexander continually dismantles and rebuilds them, allowing every composition to discover its own path.
That context extends beyond the studio and from performances at Covent Garden to charity events, his music consistently blends structure, improvisation and tradition with algorithmic design. This unique endeavour now lies at the heart of his latest composition titled “Calmez-toi Encore en fa dièse dorien (Calm Down Again in F Sharp Dorian),” part of the ongoing Aprivito series. Each work within the collection begins from the same simple premise while producing an entirely unique result.
Sitting at the keyboard without a score, predetermined structure or fixed pulse, Alexander records each performance as a single uninterrupted improvisation, allowing his own creative compass to guide the piece. Every hesitation, change of direction and fluctuation in tempo remains exactly as it occurred, preserving the reality of a specific performance taking place during a particular afternoon.

These recordings represent something more fundamental than technical execution by channelling the relationship between music and intention, an idea that has become central to his wider artistic thinking. While not resisting advances in artificial intelligence, he argues for a more careful distinction between human creativity and machine-generated output. His position is not rooted in opposition to technology but in an examination of what creativity itself represents.
These ideas form the basis of his research paper, The Bifurcation of Intent: Authentic Creation and AI “Creator” Language Games, where he explores the language surrounding artificial intelligence and the assumptions it often encourages. While systems may generate music that sounds emotionally convincing, he believes the essential difference sits in the presence of a person consciously giving meaning to each creative decision.
“Calmez-toi Encore en fa dièse dorien” starts with the delicate flicker of airy piano tones, where twinkling leads and soft bass notes engage in a balletic dance to capture a stunning performance of solo piano music. The elegant ebb and flow of his performance sees the rise of intensity where fluttering runs gather pace while stitching dazzling melodic flourishes into the spellbinding musical fabric.
Casting an enchanting musical experience that’s mesmeric, transportive and wholly absorbing, “Calmez-toi Encore en fa dièse dorien” presents an incredible showcase of Alexander’s performance panache and extraordinary creativity. Through his musical output and sonic research, Alexander Paul Burton continues to explore the overlap between classical tradition, improvisation and modern technology. His work embraces innovation without abandoning humanity, offering music that’s technically adventurous while remaining tethered to the real life experience of the person creating it.
