New York-based band Young Allies are proof that some of the most compelling music still comes from people creating together in the same room. Led by singer, songwriter and actor Fritz Michel, the group has grown into a collective where collaboration is the defining pillar behind every note and alongside guitarist and co-producer Tosh Sheridan, bassist Gavin Price, drummer Isaac Gardner, keyboardist Phil Kadet and vocalist Shelly Bhushan, Young Allies has built an output that prioritises conversation, spontaneity and shared expression over individual spotlight.
That collective spirit marks an important development for Michel who, after years of writing and recording independently, found himself increasingly drawn toward the unpredictability that comes from inviting other musicians into the process. Songs soon began to form through rehearsal, experimentation and the creative flair of everyone involved, with multiple voices gliding throughout the band’s music.
Those instincts can be traced back to the band’s shared origins within New York’s experimental theatre community with several members developing their artistic approach through Elevator Repair Service, where workshops and performances encouraged ideas to form naturally as opposed to following predetermined structures. That theatrical background continues to influence Young Allies today, fostering an openness that allows arrangements to shift and surprise as each musician responds to the others in real time.
Young Allies embraces the human moments that appear during collaboration and the recordings become documents of shared experiences, preserving the energy of late-night rehearsals, conversations, moments of disagreement and unexpected breakthroughs with every performance and recording capturing something unique, reflecting the chemistry between the musicians. Now the band shares the clearest expression of their sound with their brand new debut EP titled Fingers Entwined.

Serving as Young Allies’ first major artistic statement, the release explores the relationship between past and present, drawing inspiration from historical imagery, literature and timeless themes. The title track “Fingers Entwined” began with an unexpected visual spark, double-exposed Polaroids created by artist Natalie White. From that single image, the song expanded into a meditation on connection, coincidence and the unpredictable nature of relationships. Using the language of backgammon as a metaphor for shifting emotional stakes, the song demonstrates the band’s fascination with finding contemporary meaning inside unusual creative references.
“Watchman” reaches back almost a thousand years, drawing from French pastoral poetry centred on insomnia and longing before transforming those centuries-old emotions into something modern and relatable. “Are You In” continues that dialogue between history and the present by taking inspiration from Robert Frost’s “Nothing Gold Can Stay,” extending Young Allies’ ongoing interest in breathing new life into classic works. Those literary influences become part of an understated musical language built through collaboration, balancing careful songwriting with arrangements that feel responsive and organic.
Closing the EP with a rendition of Chuck Berry’s “You Never Can Tell,” the band serves up a grooving cover that delivers a stunning showcase of their ability to reframe beloved music in their own charming way. With Fingers Entwined, Young Allies celebrates the unpredictable beauty of genuine collaboration via a debut EP that stands as an elegant reminder that when artists truly listen to one another, the results can become something far greater than the sum of their individual parts.
