Hailing from Trondheim in Norway, Fayen is a duo who make music that reflects the sounds of Americana’s heartland filtered through a distinctly Norwegian perspective, allowing folk, country and bluegrass influences to settle alongside elegant arrangements and understated atmosphere. It’s music that feels informed by tradition while remaining shaped by the landscapes and experiences that surround the group.
Fayen is formed by vocalist Anne-Grethe Nyhaug and guitarist Gøran Bogstrand, two musicians whose individual journeys have converged into a partnership built on shared musical values and a love of timeless songwriting. Together, they’ve crafted a sound forged by expressive harmonies, organic instrumentation and delicate melodies, allowing every arrangement to serve the emotional context of each song.
Anne-Grethe’s relationship with Americana stretches back to childhood, where she was raised in the coastal village of Fiskarstrand in Norway’s Sula municipality and grew up immersed in the music of Hank Williams and Patsy Cline before later discovering artists including Neil Young, Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt. Although her career has seen her perform across a variety of musical styles, folk, country and Americana have remained the constant threads running through her artistic fabric, shaping both her voice and her storytelling.
Gøran arrives from an equally varied musical background from Melbu in VesterÃ¥len, with his guitar playing tkingn him through incredibly diverse areas, from post rock projects to performances based in West African traditional music. Over time, however, he found himself increasingly drawn towards North American folk traditions, inspired by musicians such as Dave Rawlings, Punch Brothers and Aoife O’Donovan. As Fayen, they made their artistic entrance in 2021 with the debut single “Dark Horse,” which they quickly followed up with their first EP, From Here on Out, which arrived later that year.

After taking a hiatus from sharing their sound, this year they returned with new material, releasing a string of singles in the build up to their sophomore record, Something to Look Back On. Lifted from the album, their single titled “Lines” offers one of the clearest windows into Fayen’s developing musical output. Wrapped up in an atmospheric alternative country setting, the track gently leans towards pop while reataining the Americana charm that’s always been present in their sound.
Drifting into focus with the swell of airy textures, Anne-Grethe’s fluttering vocals enter above the soft plucks and strums of acoustic guitar, forming a mesmeric musical soundscape that flows with elegant melodies and soothing instrumentation. Spinning thoughtful lyricism, Gøran’s voice floats in to cast graceful harmonies as the mellow arrangement swirls around the pair’s vocals to deliver a dreamy Americana sound. At once intimate and cinematic, enduring and modern, “Lines” gently develops with the echo of percussion and flickering strings to form a spellbinding listening experience from start to finish.
Full of intricate instrumental plucks and dazzling vocal performance carrying alluring melodies, “Lines” delivers a stunning display of Fayen’s songwriting talent, musicianship flair and performance panache, offering a magical musical moment that’s impossible not to love. With “Lines” and the wider Something to Look Back On release, Fayen have made an emphatic return to the music sphere and we can’t wait to see what comes next on this compelling new chapter.
